Message from the Chairman
"It's the Economy, Stupid"
|
The phrase, "It's the Economy, Stupid," has been coined to
describe Bill Clinton's successful presidential campaign strategy in 1992 which
lead to the defeat of sitting President George H.W. Bush. Eighteen months prior
to that election, President Bush had approval ratings as high as 90% after our
military quickly liberated Kuwait
from the invading Iraqi army with few casualties. However, as a recession gripped the country
leading up to the 1992 presidential election, President Bush's popularity plunged
and he lost the election largely due to being out campaigned on the issue of
the economy. U.S.
Presidents get too much credit for a good economy and receive too much blame
when the U.S.
economy falters. The president of the United States is the most powerful
individual on the planet but not powerful enough to single handedly change the
course of our economy. When it comes to
nurturing and growing our economy, it takes more than one individual. Adapting another Clinton's philosophy on child rearing to
economic development; "It Takes a Village" to grow and nurture our economy. Everyone has a role to play. Our elected officials' role at this time is to take a hard
look at the regulatory framework and processes that affect business and find better
ways to protect consumers, protect the environment and, at the same time,
restructure the regulatory environment to allow business to be more nimble and
more innovative. Stop voting for politicians who promise you the most and
start voting for those who articulate a sound fiscal plan that requires
personal responsibility and hard work from each of us. Security and prosperity
are achieved through productivity and personal responsibility and can not be
obtained through deficit spending or creative accounting. CEPCO doesn't endorse individuals for public office. We work
with whomever the voters elect. In the upcoming election, however, we encourage
everyone to join in the discussion, take interest and cast a vote for candidates
whose message resonates with you. Lastly, we also encourage you to follow the
advice of President John F. Kennedy when he advised us to; "Ask not what your
country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country."

CEPCO Job Creation Committee hosting City Council Candidate Forums
Courtney Nelson, Chairman of the Job Creation Committee urges attendance by CEPCO members
|
The CEPCO Job Creation Committee has scheduled an
opportunity for the Candidates for Chico City Council to meet with members of
our committee and Board members to discuss their ideas/platform for the
upcoming election. The candidates that were invited understand that CEPCO does
not endorse candidates. Historically CEPCO has always provided an opportunity
for City Council candidates to meet with us to understand our role in business
attraction and economic development as well as an opportunity to hear their
ideas as well. We really encourage CEPCO members to attend as many
sessions as possible. Each session is on Thursday morning, 7:30 a.m at the
Chico Chamber Conference Room at 300 Salem Street.
