From the Executive Director

Dear Friends,
I'm happy to report that the population of kittens at the shelter has decreased significantly as a result of our summer adoption promotions!  I must confess, however, that we're still holding our breath in hopes that we don't see a late-summer surge of kitten births and surrenders, as we sometimes do.  Please keep your fingers crossed for us.

Picture of Store ItemsWhile you'll no longer find the receiving area at the shelter surrounded by kitten cages, you will find a brand new supply of pet-care items for sale.  Boxes and boxes of left-over pet supplies were recently donated to CCHS at the close of a trade show at the I-Hotel.  We've got some great dog and cat toys, grooming supplies, and LOTS of rawhide.  100% of the purchase price will go directly toward CCHS animal care expenses!!

I'd also like to call your attention to a new feature in the E-Newsletter, "Special Needs."   While we always appreciate monetary donations, we also welcome donations of goods and services.  Each month, we'll post a few suggestions for in-kind donations in the Special Needs section of the newsletter.

While the economy remains uncertain, our animals still need care and our shelter facility needs maintenance and repairs.  We might be able to use certain items that are no-longer of use to you or your business.  Or, you might just prefer to pick-up a specific item for us at the store, rather than send in a check.  Whatever the case may be, please check our Special Needs section each month.  You might be surprised to find that you can make a bigger difference than you thought.

I hope you enjoy this issue of the E-Newsletter, and I also hope I'll be seeing you at the Fur Ball!  for more on that, read on.

Very truly yours,

Tief

Fur Ball 2009

How often can you say there is a fur ball coming up, and you won't want to miss it?  Well, once a year.  The 2nd  annual Fur Ball to benefit CCHS will be held Friday, September 25 at 6 p.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn.  The evening will include dinner, a silent auction, a live auction, and entertainment by harpist Abigail Maley.  Auction items include jewelry, luxury box tickets to an Illinois football game, Chicago Cubs tickets, golf outings, a three-night stay for two at Heartland Spa in Gilman, gift certificates for many popular restaurants in Champaign and Urbana, and much more.

Champaign realtor Stefanie Pratt is chair of the Fur Ball for the second year in a row.  She and the Fur Ball Committee have been working tirelessly to ensure that this year's event is as festive and successful a gala as last year's, which earned over $50,000 thanks to the generosity of friends like you.  Contributions assist CCHS in its mission to promote animal welfare, prevent animal cruelty, educate the public about the humane care of animals, and provide shelter to homeless animals on their way to finding forever homes.

Individual tickets are available for $75 by calling 217 344-7297.  More information and details on some of the auction items are available on our website, www.cuhumane.org.  The deadline for making a reservation is September 16.

Alum of the Month:  Dr. Brady Sox (formerly Doogie)
Picture of Brady SoxHe was known at CCHS at Doogie, but now the Beagle/Boxer mix happily answers to "Brady," short for Dr. Brady Sox.  In March 2009, Jenny Linker saw Doogie on the CCHS website along with his four litter mates.  When she came in to meet the pups she could tell right away that Doogie had an independent spirit and "a lot of personality."  Jenny renamed him Dr. Brady Sox after her favorite quarterback, Tom Brady, and her favorite baseball team, the Boston Red Sox (Jenny Linker is from western Massachusetts).

Jenny reports that Brady adapted to his new home right away.  The first few weeks he wanted to be by her side constantly, but in no time at all his lovable spunky nature was in full force.

Brady did very well in his puppy class.  He is now an expert at 'puppy push ups,' (going from a sit to a down and vice versa), and he can 'stay' for a long time.  At home, Brady can now reach the counter tops.  Although he does get into mischief sometimes, it usually just makes Jenny laugh.

Jenny says Dr. Brady Sox is a very social dog who loves children and other dogs.  Jenny and Brady enjoy going to the Urbana Dog Park at least two times a week.  And now, at only eight months old, he has seen Niagara Falls.  They made a road trip this summer to her home in Massachusetts, stopping to enjoy the sites along the way.  Jenny says Dr. Brady Sox is terrific at home and great on the road.  We look forward to getting postcards from Jenny and Dr. Brady Sox for years to come.

Volunteer of the Month:  Brad Hudson
Picture of BradBeginning last Spring and throughout the Summer, veteran shelter volunteer Brad Hudson has reported for duty every weekend to help our Adoptions staff assist CCHS patrons.  If you've ever been to the shelter on a Saturday, you probably know that our staff is stretched to its limits.  Brad's assistance at the front-desk has been in addition to, not instead of, his 'regular' volunteer duties:  grooming animals every Thursday afternoon; serving on the Board of Directors, and several committees thereof; and organizing the Books section for the Giant Garage Sale.  In addition, as a faculty member in the UI Fine and Applied Arts Department, Brad teaches a Service Learning/Photography class designed to provide CCHS with high quality animal photographs for our website, cage cards, and other promotions.  Even in his 'day job' Brad is helping CCHS.

Brad's interest in animal welfare developed when he was an undergraduate student at UC Davis and had a work-study job at the Primate Research Center.  Around that time, he also volunteered at one of the local animal shelters, where conditions were pretty deplorable by current standards.

Brad most enjoys his volunteer work that directly impacts the lives of shelter animals or increases their chance for adoption.  He told me, "I suppose I get the greatest sense of accomplishment out of grooming, because there is a very tangible result in the end.  The dog whose coat was one solid mat of hair can now move his limbs.  The cat who was covered in grease from hiding under a car hood is now clean and willing to groom herself."  When I asked Brad whether he found volunteering at the shelter to be overwhelming or sad (a question frequently raised to our staff and volunteers), he had the best answer I've heard yet, "I don't worry about the animals that are in our care; I worry about the ones who need it."

Thanks, Brad - from all your friends on the CCHS staff!
Employee of the Month:  Allison Cole
Picture of Alison Cole Allison graduated from the University of Illinois in May 2009, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Interactive Biology.  However, it was her minor in Animal Science that led Allison to CCHS as an Animal Care intern in January 2009, and we're so glad it did.  Allison is a really hard worker who cares deeply for all our animal residents.

Allison's love of animals first emerged when she was about five years old, as an intense fascination with Killer Whales.  Luckily for her parents, Allison also became fascinated with dogs--a much more suitable companion--and when Allison was 11, they finally conceded to her second choice for the family pet.

It was watching the Animal Cops program on Animal Planet that first sparked Allison's interest in animal shelters.

Allison's internship project was to redesign our small animal area.  The new design uses space more efficiently, is more attractive, and provides shelving for small-mammal cages that is safe and easy to reconfigure as needed.  Now that Allison is a member of the Animal Care staff, she sees first-hand the impact her internship has had on CCHS.

Allison says that she is motivated to work hard every day because she knows that her efforts are improving the quality of life for shelter animals.  Even if it is only to provide a clean kennel or cage, that is important to the animal living in that space.  We appreciate Allison for her diligence and dedication as both an intern and an employee.  Thanks, Allison!
Pet of the Month:  Fluff
Picture of Fluff Fluff is a six-year old Maine Coon mix.  She was relinquished to the shelter in March 2009, and is now a resident of Cuddle Town, one of our communal cat rooms.  Early this summer, when we set up a television and VCR in Cuddle Town to entertain the cats with a "Cat Sitter" video, we weren't sure how the cats would respond.  It didn't take any time for Fluff to let us know that the Cat Sitter video was a hit with her.  She was immediately transfixed!

Fluff would be a great addition to any family.  She does well with children, dogs, and other cats.  In addition to watching birds and rodents on television, she loves to cuddle and will sit in your lap and give you big kitty kisses.  In time, Fluff may even gain an appreciation for your favorite TV shows (or maybe you'll find yourself mesmerized by prerecorded squirrel banter.)
