Hormone Health Risk: HCG
|
Many people have "lose weight" at the top of their New Year's resolution list, but as we end the first week of 2012 some people may be losing steam and looking for a quick fix. Well, if you're looking in the direction of HCG-laced products stop right there.
Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) is an over-the-counter (OTC) weight loss ingredient that is in products often identified as "homeopathic". HCG is a hormone that is produced by the human placenta during pregnancy. It is approved by the FDA as a prescription drug for the treatment of female infertility, and other medical conditions. It is not approved for weight loss and in a recent press release, "HCG Diet Drugs Are Illegal", the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is advising consumers to steer clear of these "homeopathic" HCG weight-loss products.
Products that claim to contain HCG are typically marketed in connection with a very low calorie diet, usually one that limits calories to 500 per day. Many of these popular HCG products claim to "reset your metabolism," change "abnormal eating patterns," and shave 20-30 pounds in 30-40 days. Eating a diet so low in calories can be dangerous if you're not under a physician's supervision. Any diet that promotes a caloric intake of fewer than 1200 calories is considered unsafe because you will not be able to get the nutrition you need to stay healthy.
Bottom Line: If you are trying to lose weight, the best bet is to cut out a few hundred calories every day (choose smaller portion sizes) and be sure to get both cardio and weight training exercise in 2-3 times per week. And, as is always the case with diets and diet supplements, if it seems too good to be true - it is!

Win the Chocolate Battle
|
Do you ever (make that always) get that chocolate craving in the middle of the afternoon? Right at the time when your guard is down and your hunger is up? Work-place chocolate breaks can seem like a good idea, until that one piece of chocolate turns into one bag of chocolate. Well, now we have good news...you have a powerful tool to fight these urges. New research, published in the journal, Appetite, suggests that employees may find that short breaks away from their desks can keep their minds off snacking.
In this study, 78 regular chocolate-eaters were asked to abstain from chocolate for two days. They were divided into four groups and invited to enter a simulated work environment. Two of the four groups were asked to take a brisk 15-minute walk on a treadmill and were then given work to complete at a desk. One of these groups was given an easy, low-stress task, while the other was asked to complete a more demanding job.
The other two of the four groups were asked to have a rest before completing the same tasks as the first two groups. Again, half were given an easier task and the remainder a more challenging one. Chocolate was available in a bowl on the desk for all participants as they carried out their work.
Those who had exercised before working consumed, on average, half the amount of chocolate as the others: around 15 grams, compared with 28 grams. Interestingly, the difficulty of the task made no difference as to the amount of chocolate they ate, which suggests that stress did not contribute to their cravings for sweet snacks.
Bottom Line: Taking a 15 minute exercise break can not only clear your head and help you to be more productive, but it may actually cut your chocolate intake by half. Over time, halving this source of empty calories can make a big difference in your calorie intake and your weight. So get out there and move.
