Pasta Fra Diavolo
Serves 8

Ingredients
4 tablespoons olive oil, divided
6 cloves garlic, crushed
3 cups whole peeled tomatoes with liquid, chopped
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
1 (16 ounce) package linguine pasta
8 ounces small shrimp, peeled and de-veined
8 ounces bay scallops
1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley

Directions

1. In a large saucepan, heat 2 tablespoons of the olive oil with the garlic over medium heat. When the garlic starts to sizzle, pour in the tomatoes. Season with salt and red pepper. Bring to a boil. Lower the heat, and simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
2. Meanwhile, bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Cook pasta for 8 to 10 minutes, or until al dente; drain.
3. In a large skillet, heat the remaining 2 tablespoons of olive oil over high heat. Add the shrimp and scallops. Cook for about 2 minutes, stirring frequently, or until the shrimp turn pink. Add shrimp and scallops to the tomato mixture, and stir in the parsley. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes, or until the sauce just begins to bubble. Serve sauce over pasta.

Hello  !

Have you ever heard of AminoSweet? It's the newest moniker for the artificial sweetener aspartame. You may recognize aspartame as Nutra-Sweet or Equal, two of its earlier names. In 2009, a new company bought the aspartame business and decided to rename it yet again. The name, which perhaps was chosen because it sounds scientific and therefore healthy, is because aspartame is made from two amino acids: phenyalanine and aspartic acid.

Despite the name, it's still a chemical sweetener and perhaps okay sometimes; consuming artificially sweetened foods and beverages should not be an every day event.

Have a healthy week!

Buyer Beware: Colon Cleanses
You see the ads everywhere, "colon cleanse," "lose weight fast" and the best one of all, "waste builds up in your colon like spackle or paste." But is there any truth to these claims?

No! Our entire intestinal tract was designed specifically to not have any build up. The cells of our large intestine (colon) die and slough off every few days; there is no build up that we can blame weight gain on.

Even the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has had enough. Last month a U.S. district court ordered the marketers of acai berry supplements, "colon cleansers," and other products to temporarily halt an Internet sales scheme that allegedly scammed consumers out of $30 million or more in 2009. Consumers were promised a "free-trial" but were repeatedly (and illegally) billed on their credit cards. One of the claims that the FTC calls "bogus" is the claim that a colon cleanse could prevent colon cancer!

Bottom Line: In our buyer-beware-culture, we can learn a lesson from this internet scheme. If it appears too good to be true, it very likely is. Healthful weight loss takes time and planning. There is no magic pill that can help you "lose weight without diet or exercise."

Worst Restaurant Foods for Your Waistline
We all know that restaurant food can be a real killer for waistlines and arteries. Take a look at this compilation Men's Health™ recently put together of the top 5 worst restaurant foods and think twice before finishing off that Provolone-Stuffed Meatballs with Fettuccine!

Denny's Fried Cheese Melt with wavy fries and marinara
1,260 calories
63 grams fat (21 grams saturated, 1 grams trans fat)
3,010 mg sodium
Calorie equivalent: 18 T.G.I. Friday's Cheddar and Bacon Potato Skins (3 full boxes)

IHOP's New York Cheesecake Pancakes
1,270 calories
Calorie equivalent: 28 McDonald's Chicken McNuggets

Friendly's Grilled Cheese BurgerMelt (burger between two grilled cheese sandwiches)
1,500 calories
97 g fat (38 grams saturated)
2,090 mg sodium
Calorie equivalent: 15 Snickers Kudos Granola Bars

UNO's Chicago Grill Lobster BLT Thin Crust Pizza
1,530 calories
87 grams fat (30 grams saturated)
3,480 mg sodium
Calorie equivalent: 51 Nabisco Ginger Snap Cookies (80% of one box)

Applebee's Provolone-Stuffed Meatballs with Fettuccine
1,550 calories
97 grams fat (46 grams saturated)
3,910 mg sodium
Calorie equivalent: 148 Whoppers Malted Milk Balls (nearly 2.5 5-ounce boxes)

Bottom Line: Let's give these values a little perspective; for a 2,000 calorie diet the recommendation is to have no more than 15 grams of saturated fat a day. And the maximum recommended daily amount of sodium for adults is 2,300 mg. Restaurant food may be tasty and convenient, but its impact on our waistlines should definitely make us all think twice when dining out!
