Grilled Vegetable Wraps

Makes 2 wraps

Ingredients
12 thin asparagus spears, trimmed
1 small red bell pepper, cut into 1/2-inch strips (1 cup)
1 small yellow summer squash or zucchini, cut into 1/4-inch-thick rounds (1 cup)
1 Tbs. olive oil
1/2 cup white beans
1 small clove garlic, minced (1/2 tsp.)
1/2 tsp. red chile sauce, such as sriracha
2 8-inch whole-grain tortillas
6 small whole basil leaves
8 thin slices red onion
1 cup baby arugula leaves

Directions
1. Preheat grill or broiler. Toss together asparagus, bell pepper, squash, and oil on large baking sheet. Season with salt and pepper, if desired. Grill or broil vegetables 4 to 6 minutes per side, turning once.
2. Mash together beans, garlic, and chile sauce in small bowl until smooth.
3. Spread half of bean mixture over each tortilla. Top each with 3 basil leaves, 1/2 cup roasted vegetables, 4 onion slices, and 1/2 cup arugula. Fold bottom third of tortillas over vegetables, and roll up tightly, tucking in sides as you go. Cut wraps in half on diagonal. Serve immediately, or wrap each half in foil or wax paper, and chill until ready to eat.

Hello  !

It seems that ads for pills that help you "lose weight fast"  such as Alli and Orlistat are everywhere: television, magazines, maybe even at your doctor's office!

Are you considering caving in and buying one of these products? Educate your self first! If something seems too good to be true, that's probably because it is!
medal
Read below about current safety concerns and a recent recall on these weight loss drugs. Remember, a healthful diet and exercise are the best and safest ways to ensure long term success in reaching your weight goals.

Have a healthy week!

Weight-loss Supplements to Avoid
AlliThe Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has identified 12 cases of severe liver injury reported in people taking Xenical and one case reported with the use of Alli.

Xenical and Alli contain different strengths of the same active ingredient, orlistat. In 1999, the FDA approved Xenical (orlistat 120 mg) as a prescription product for obesity management along with a reduced caloric diet for weight loss and to reduce the risk of regaining weight after prior weight loss. In 2007, Alli (orlistat 60 mg) was approved to be sold without a prescription for weight loss in overweight adults, 18 years and older, when used along with a reduced-calorie and low-fat diet.

The drug in these diet pills works by blocking 25% of the fat you eat from being absorbed, and "the fat that isn't absorbed is harmlessly passed through your bowels. As a result, you may experience some bowel changes during the first few weeks of use." (http://www.myalli.com?About_alli/treatment_effects.aspx) "Alli users take one pill with every meal, and to avoid an "Alli oops," they should eat less than 42 grams of fat per day, or about 15 grams per meal. But those fat grams can be sneaky. One grande Starbucks Caramel Frappuccino contains 15 grams of fat, and if an Alli user adds even a low-fat muffin to that meal, it could get icky. Go to http://www.msnbc.com/id/19587389/ for more (disturbingly gross) details! The company suggests that you wear dark pants and bring several changes of clothing and underwear to avoid embarrassing moments!

In addition to these extremely embarrassing side effects, there is also the potential for dangerous liver complications. Although a cause-and-effect relationship of severe liver injury with orlistat use has not been established, it is still a significant risk. As a result, the FDA has revised the drug labels for Xenical and Alli to include new safety information about the rare occurrence of severe liver injury.

The signs and symptoms of severe liver injury include "itching, yellow eyes or skin, fever, weakness, vomiting, fatigue, dark urine, light-colored stools, or loss of appetite."  (http://www.fda.gov/Drugs/DrugSafety/PostmarketDr

Remember, weight loss happens when you eat a little less and move a little more...
The Big Picture
goalWhen striving for goals such as weight loss or saving money, many people may find it helpful to set small short-term goals. This is considered the "how to" of attaining goals; "I will lose weight by bringing healthful lunches to work", is an example of how a person may achieve his/her weight loss goal. However, according to a new study in the Journal of Consumer Research, these individuals can have a hard time achieving their goals if they lose sight of the big picture.

In the example above, if an individual decides he will bring in his lunch from home to cut calories, but stops for ice cream after work every day, he will likely not end up achieving his goal of weight loss. However, if he is able to maintain focus on the "big picture", he may have more success.

In this study, researchers investigated behaviors related to saving money. In one part of the study, participants were asked to develop a specific plan to save money, whereas others were not asked to plan. Of these two groups, some study participants were then asked to focus on why they wanted to save money. Then, all the participants were given the opportunity to buy candy.

The researchers found that those who were originally asked to reflect on why they wanted to save money and had drawn up a plan, were able to resist splurging on candy more so than those who had just drawn up a plan and were not given the opportunity to focus on the big picture of why they wanted to save.

Bottom Line: Setting short term goals is necessary for most people to achieve long term success. However, remembering and reflecting on why those short-term goals were set is just as important.
