Dear Friends of IPM,
As we get closer to the Autumn Equinox
I hope this finds you in good spirits. Soon leaves will turn more
colorful; even in the midst of great seasonal transition and the
letting go of life, we see beauty.
At seventeen I recall listening to the deep music of The Wild Swans at Coole
by W. B. Yeats. Yeats captures the magic of language. It was then I
learned about the capacity of language to transport me:
THE TREES are in their autumn beauty, The woodland paths are dry, Under the October twilight the water Mirrors a still sky; Upon the brimming water among the stones Are nine and fifty swans....
The entire poem explores how much things change in our lives,
bringing the great and heartbreaking loss of who and what I love. Yet
finally, to Yeats, that very change allows for a sense of profound
nostalgia, mystery, even hope.
While there is great healing power, and yes a kind of raw beauty in
unvarnished, direct, truth-telling language, so too there is healing in
the beauty of lyric language.
Plato, it is said, taught that beautiful language conveys a sense of sophrosyne, which to the ancient Greek meant a sense of integration and happiness. They considered that the opposite of hubris. There are parallels regarding sophrosyne
to be found in all great spiritual traditions. I know that this kind
of language, heard on turbulent seas, helped to calm and deepen me .
I wish you some beautiful language this season! To read The Wild Swans at Coole in its entirety:
I am enthusiastic about my upcoming fall schedule that includes bringing "poetic medicine" to: Vermont, New Hampshire, Georgia, New York, Connecticut, New Mexico, South Carolina, Ohio and right here at home in Northern California. You can check out my schedule below.
Many of these programs are open to the public. Some are not; these ones are dedicated to psychology students, pastoral care
counselors, patients and medical staff at hospitals and conferences
where I'll be going.
I am posting nearly everything I'm doing so you can see the scope
of our work at IPM. Afer reading this, you might consider a program for the
institution where you work. Please share this "constant contact" with
your friends in the areas of the country where I'll be going.
Looking ahead to October, we will share a newsletter with you that contains some fabulous stories about how The Institute
for Poetic Medicine's poetry partner programs are serving people with
a range of needs.
We always welcome your responses.
Sincerely yours,
John Fox P.S. If you didn't see my previous Constant Contact communication to you with resources and recommendations from The Institute for Poetic Medicine, you can find it here: (Click Here)

Emily Dickinson
We live in a
country geared to speed and youth.
Southwest painter Georgia O'Keefe said, "Nobody sees a flower-really-it is so small-we haven't
time-and to see takes time like to have a friend takes time."
We also live in
a culture that prizes an ideal kind of health and yet avoids or denies those
times when an illness like cancer impacts our lives.
Poetry's gift,
and strangely, the unsought gift of cancer, encourages us to slow down and take
our time. We learn to pay
attention to what counts.
We take our time
to not only see a small flower, but to feel the richness of cherished
relationships. You may wish to
mend or release connections that are broken. You may gain greater appreciation for the whole world,
broken as it appears to be.
By sharing our
poems with one another, we take time to listen to a friend. It is a great gift, that kind of
listening. It helps to mend the
spirit. All of this gives the word
hope and being hopeful a sense of authenticity.
This writing
workshop will stimulate and encourage you to explore experiences and feelings
encountered in your daily life. As someone who knows they are on a healing
journey, you have much to say about life.
No previous
experience with writing and poetry is necessary! Or you may love writing poetry and/or have wonderful poems
memorized. All are welcome!
