Greetings!

Welcome!  You will notice in this issue that we discuss what happened with SB398 and the "raw milk" amendment. I have had some interesting discussions on this topic and would welcome your call if you'd like to share your opinion.

We encourage you to click on our sponsors' logos and learn more about them. You might even find an opportunity to work with them! Our sponsors are so important in helping us fulfill our mission. We'd especially like to welcome Papillon, our newest Bronze level sponsor!

I have been to several farmer meetings in the last couple of weeks. I really enjoy getting to meet you and learn about your farm or your industry concerns. As you will notice, there's plenty of activities coming up. A lot of effort goes into making these meetings successful, and they are for you. Take advantage of them! Come for the food, fellowship, and opportunities to learn new ideas that you can use back home. We really hope to see you there.

I have been getting more and more calls from our members with questions or concerns. Keep them coming! Don't hesitate to contact me with any of your dairy needs at dougleman@indianadairy.org or call 317-695-8228. Be safe, and God bless.

Doug Leman,
IPDP Executive Director

Senate Bill 398 is Dead
Indiana Statehouse Thank you for the many emails and phone calls concerning our recent Action Alert on the raw milk amendment that was attached to Senate Bill 398. No matter what your personal opinion is on legalizing the sale of unpasteurized milk, this particular amendment had no protection for public health and could have placed the dairy industry at risk, according to our legal experts. Fortunately, our legislators heard those concerns, and the sponsors of the legislation did not call for a vote on SB398. There is legislation that has passed the House (HB1129) which started as a similar bill. This legislation will soon be considered by the Indiana Senate. We will be keeping an eye out on this legislation. Many believe that a summer study committee of legislators, health professionals, animal health experts and those in the dairy community should study the raw milk issue more fully. You can keep up on any state legislation by going to the Indiana General Assembly website. They do an excellent job of keeping up on current legislative activity.

IPDP Regular Board Meeting
A regular IPDP board of directors meeting was held on January 24th. At every regular board meeting, IPDP board members hear updates from state agencies and partnership organizations, including BOAH, IDEM, ISA/ICMC, IFB, MPSI and more. Click here to read the agency updates.

Department of Labor Announces Plans to Re-propose the Parental Exemption for Farm Youth Labor Rules

IPDP joined many ag organizations in calling for the US Department of Labor to change the proposed rules for farm youth labor. We submitted official comments here. It appears that DOL  received over 10 thousand comments to their proposed rule. Now they have announced plans to re-propose the parental exemption. We believe that this process still needs to be watched closely. Even if the parental exemption is cleared up, there are concerns that agriculture will be inaccessible to youth outside of a family situation. You may want to subscribe to a wonderful website called "Keep Families Farming" to keep up on this important issue. You can also read more on this issue from Hoosier Ag Today here.

Artisan Cheese Making
Small Dairy Processing
Meeting on March 6
Goat Cheese The Indiana State Board of Animal Health (BOAH) will be hosting a meeting for small, artisan dairy processors on March 6, 2012 at 1p.m.  This meeting will be the third of its kind BOAH has hosted in the past year.  The goal of these meetings is to bring together owners of small dairy processing operations, or those interested in starting such an enterprise, to share ideas and experiences and learn more from BOAH staff about regulatory issues.  The meeting will take place at the agency's new office-located in Discovery Hall at the Indiana State Fairgrounds-on March 6, 2012.

Featured speaker Kristy Kikly will share her experiences starting an on-farm cheese-making business last year.  Kikly and her husband Mike Hoopengardner own and operate Carpini Creamery located in Spiceland, Ind.  Together they milk a herd of approximately 100 goats, and then manufacture various cheeses.  Kikly has owned the farm since 2007, but the cheese production facility opened in August 2011.  Off the farm Kikly is a scientist with Eli Lilly and Company. Contact the Indiana State Board of Animal Health for more information at 317/544-2400.

Scholarship
Some of our IPDP sponsors offer tremendous scholarship opportunities to young students. Here are a few we are aware of that can be applied for this year. Watch deadlines!

Wal-Mart to Label Healthy Food;
Skim Milk and Some Yogurt Included
Angela Bowman, Dairy Herd Network
Walmart Great for You IconWal-Mart has unveiled its "Great for You" icon , a part of the company's healthier food initiative aimed at helping consumers make quick nutritional decisions. The icon will initially appear on select Wal-Mart Great Value and Marketside items, as well as on fresh and packaged fruits and vegetables this spring.

Skim and 1 percent lowfat milk qualify for the icon, but 2 percent milk and whole milk do not. Plain or artificially sweetened yogurt qualifies, while yogurt sweetened with sugar does not.

Andrea Thomas, senior vice president of sustainability at Wal-Mart, points that the company is listening to the wants and needs of shoppers.

Campylobacter Outbreak in Northeast Sickens 43;
Linked to Unpasteurized Milk

Raw Milk Dairy Farmer

Pennsylvania dairy farmer Edwin Shank, owner of The Family Cow, announced that he is making changes to the way they produce raw milk on his farm, which is apparently the source of a January campylobacter outbreak.

The number of people sickened in the outbreak has grown to 43 confirmed cases in four states, the Pennsylvania Department of Health reported.

Shank told consumers that his family had a serious discussion about the issue and decided to continue selling raw milk. The farm will use hotter water to wash out the milking system. Extremely hot water is needed for washing the milk tank, milking system and bottler. A high-technology, tankless system will consistently deliver 180-degree water.

Contacting Your Legislators

We learned firsthand what a difference it can make when we contact our legislators. We are fortunate to live in a country where we can have access to those who make our laws. Even so, we have to take action and make those calls or send those emails in order to let our opinions be heard. Our legislators need to be educated about dairy issues, and they are looking to you to deliver. If you don't know them personally, why not take the time to introduce yourself? We live in very interesting times, and you have a message that our legislators need to hear. Click here to get contact information and more on your Indiana legislators. For US legislators and agencies, click  here.
