State to Host Meeting for
Small Dairy Processors

INDIANAPOLIS (15 Dec. 2010 )- Increased consumer demand for local and artisan foods has sparked growth in the Indiana dairy industry, particularly among small start-up processing facilities. Operators of those facilities-often dairy producers who want to manufacture products on the farm-have a unique set of concerns unlike their larger counterparts, such as obtaining information and finding resources to comply with food safety laws.

To address some of those issues, the Indiana State Board of Animal Health (BOAH) will be hosting a meeting for operators of smaller-capacity dairy processing facilities. The meeting will be at the agency's Indianapolis office, located at 4154 N. Keystone Ave., at 1:30 pm on Thursday, January 20, 2011.

Indiana Certified Livestock Producer
Training Offered in January

CLPP Logo

Hoosier Ag Today

The Indiana State Department of Agriculture has three workshops in January for producers wanting to begin the process of becoming a Certified Livestock Producer. CLPP is a voluntary program that recognizes farmers for their commitment to innovative and top industry standards.

The free workshop would be the only training producers would have to attend according to program manager John Nagle. "This just helps go over the process and let them know what we're looking for and what they need to do to complete the process," he told HAT.

"Then after that it's all up to the producer and they can work at it any pace they want. If they want to hurry up and go through it or if they want to take their time and work through it slowly, I'm able to work with them in the time frame that works best for the producer."

December 28, 2010

by
Ken Anderson
Brownfield Ag News

USDA's APHIS is proposing changes to its testing and certification requirements for brucellosis.

One of the changes would reduce the age at which cattle are included in herd blood tests.

APHIS says the changes "are necessary to refocus resources to control and prevent the spread of brucellosis and to protect and maintain the economic viability of the domestic livestock industry."

The agency published the interim rule and request for comments in the December 27th  Federal Register.  The comment period runs through February 25th.

Feds Say Dairy Sold Cows

With Drug Residue

January 15, 2011

Phoenix News

Federal authorities say a northwest Washington dairy sold cows for slaughter despite drug residues not approved for human consumption. The 850-cow Rhody Dairy LLC of Sumas was charged civilly in U.S. District Court in Seattle this week with violations of the federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act.

The Justice Department said that despite repeated warnings, the dairy administered antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medicines to its cattle in unapproved dosages or without prescriptions, or that it failed to observe proper drug withdrawal times before offering the cows for slaughter.

They also said the dairy refused to keep treatment records for the animals. Federal officials inspected the dairy in March and July after three cows tested positive. They said Rhody Dairy sells cows for slaughter and sale to consumers in states including Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho and Oregon.

Dairy owner Jay De Jong did not immediately return a message seeking comment Saturday.

Adding Rollover Protection Would Be
A Great Winter Shop Project

Mon, 12/27/2010

Rollover protection systems (ROPS) save lives. When ROPS are used with seat belts, 99 percent of tractor drivers survive rollover accidents. And, even if the seat belt isn't worn, 70 percent of drivers live to tell about the accident report researchers in a recent USA Today article titled, "Tractor upgrades cut deaths."
Tractor
Based on Hoard's Dairyman readership studies, the average dairy farm owns 5.3 tractors. Nearly every dairy farm has one, two, or maybe even more tractors that predate the farm manufacturers' voluntary safety program which began in 1985. That manufacturer program placed a ROPS on every tractor leaving the assembly line.

Dairy's Brave New Exporting World

January 9, 2011

Editor's note: Dairy Today editor Jim Dickrell gave the following presentation at AgConnect's Dairy Forum Sunday in Atlanta.

The U.S. dairy industry has seen increasing price volatility over the past several decades, with highs and lows reaching ever greater peaks and troughs. In 2007 prices reached unprecedented highs and in 2009 they harkened back to the low levels of the 1970s. This price volatility has implications for all aspects of U.S. dairy production, ranging from animal identification to disease control to milk quality.

Much of this volatility is being driven by the United States' entry into the global export dairy market. For example, in 2008 the United States exported nearly 11% of its total production on a solids basis. Export sales totaled $3.83 billion. This surge in exports came as a result of U.S. processors' new willingness to meet specific overseas customers' needs, a weak U.S. dollar and supply constraints in Australia and New Zealand.

Previewing Dairy Policy Options Before the Next Farm Bill

Dennis A. Shields

Specialist in Agricultural Policy

Sharply lower milk prices in 2009 activated standing federal programs to support dairy farmers. In calendar year 2009, the federal government spent more than $1 billion to support the industry through the Milk Income Loss Contract (MILC) Program, the Dairy Product Price Support Program (DPPSP), and the Dairy Export Incentive Program (DEIP). Following appeals from dairy farmers for more financial assistance, Congress granted another $350 million in October 2009 in the form of supplemental payments to dairy farmers and government purchases of dairy products.

While farm milk prices have increased since summer 2009, the financial stress encountered by dairy farmers in 2009 has led the industry and Congress to reconsider how to deal with fluctuations in milk prices and financial prospects for dairy farmers. Some members have voiced interest in developing alternatives to current programs (which expire in 2012) and incorporating them as part of the next omnibus farm bill in the 112th Congress.

Vilsack and the 2012 Farm Bill

December 29, 2010
by Ken Anderson
Brownfield Ag News

During a recent appearance on the Iowa Public Television program Iowa Press, Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack was asked for his thoughts on formulation of the next farm bill.

"I've had a chance to visit Chairman Lucas, the incoming chairman of the house ag committee, and I think he is going to take some time to establish his chairmanship, establish his staff and he sees the debate discussion about the farm bill not taking place until probably 2012, so we have probably a year or so to talk about this."

Vilsack points out that, when it comes to the farm bill, there are a number of competing interests.

Consumers today are increasingly questioning the quality and care taken in the production of meat, milk and eggs. Some of that concern stems from the fact that companion animals are increasingly being viewed by society as family members.

While many recognize and accept that there is a difference between animals used as companions and animals used for nourishment, most agree that animals raised for whatever purpose should be humanely cared for.
