ALL SCHOOL POT LUCK - This Friday at 6pm. Please bring a dish to share. We will fill up our plates and eat outside (weather permitting) together along the banks and footpath, so please bring a blanket, your own utensils, and napkins. This is always a wonderful way to start out the year, getting all the TGS families; new and returning, together for a little food and fun! I hope to see you all there, Steve
LETTER FROM SARAH DUNBAR ABOUT SWINE FLU - Dear TGS Parents,
As you may
know, flu can be easily spread from person to person. Therefore, we are taking
steps to reduce the spread of flu at The Grammar School. We want to keep the
school open to students and functioning in a normal manner during this flu
season. But, we need your help to do this.
We are
working closely with the State
of Vermont health department to monitor flu conditions and make decisions about
the best steps to take concerning schools. We will keep you updated with new
information as it becomes available.
If the
flu becomes more severe, we may take additional steps to prevent the spread such
as: - conducting
active fever and flu symptom screening of students and staff as they
arrive at school, - making changes to increase space between people such as, moving desks farther apart, - postponing class trips, and - dismissing students from school for at least 7 days if they become sick. For now we
are doing everything we can to keep our school functioning as usual. Here are a
few things you can do to help.
- Teach your
children to wash their hands often with soap and water or an
alcohol-based hand rub. You can set a good example by doing this yourself. - Teach your
children not to share personal items like drinks,
food or unwashed utensils, and to cover their coughs and sneezes with
tissues. Covering up their coughs or sneezes using the elbow, arm or
sleeve instead of the hand when a tissue is unavailable. - Know the
signs and symptoms of the flu. Symptoms of the flu include
fever (100 degrees Fahrenheit, 37.8 degrees Celsius or greater), cough,
sore throat, a runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, and feeling
very tired. Some people may also vomit or have diarrhea. Keep sick
children at home for at least 24 hours after they
no longer have fever or do not have signs of fever, without using
fever-reducing drugs. Keeping children with a fever at home will
reduce the number of people who may get infected. Do not send
children to school if they are sick. Any children
who are determined to be sick while at school will be sent home.
For more
information, visit www.flu.gov, or
call 1-800-CDC-INFO for the most current information about the flu. We will be sending home pamphlets and more information via backpack express later in the week. You can also view these forms on the TGS website or click on the following link. PARENT RESOURCES We will
notify you of any additional changes to our school's strategy to prevent the
spread of flu.
Sincerely,
Steve Lorenz Sara

The annual TGS Medieval Faire is only a month away and we need your help! Saturday, October 10th is the day and we are VERY excited! We will need ALL families to participate and with that in mind, please sign up for designated duties (workshifts, food prep, etc) in the main building hallway. Among the tasks: soliciting donations for the raffle, setting up in advance of the Faire, food prep for the Tavern...It is expected that all families will prepare at least one dish for either the tavern or the marketplace and sign up for at least one shift. The success of the Faire depends upon the TGS community...each year the Faire attracts over 1500 attendees to the School for a day of merriment and fun. In addition, over $10,000 is raised to support TGS. Thank you in advance! (PS We are still seeking a pony or two for pony rides....)
WE ARE RESUMING OUR SCHOOL-WIDE YEAR-LONG COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT: Each month a class or two will be in charge of collecting non-perishable food items and /or toiletries that will be delivered to the Putney Food Shelf. These are always greatly appreciated. Usually there is a box for donated items outside the office as well as one in or near the classroom that is collecting for the designated month. THE THIRD GRADE WILL BE COLLECTING FOR SEPTEMBER. THANK YOU!
FIELD TRIPS ARE BEGINNING - Please remember that all children under the age of 8 should be in a carseat/booster seat. Please make sure you provide one for your child for field trips. Thank you.
7-8 STUDIO CLASS LIST is available online on the TGS Community Site - formerly the TGS Underground. We are still in need of a couple of guitars and keyboards. Please email Alli if you have one to loan for the fall term. If you have a TGS keyboard at home that you have borrowed, may we borrow it back for a couple of months? Thank you! PIZZA! - We will begin selling pizza TODAY! $2 a slice to help defray the cost of eighth grade field trips.
SCHOOL STORE - Due to the high sodium content in cup-of-noodles we will be selling healthier "Soup at hands" they are more expensive, therefore we will be charging $2 per soup.
TGS Website Updates -We have been working to make the website more current and informative and we encourage you to check out the changes and additions. Please find each class homeroom page under the PROGRAM button, and click on the teachers' page link for class news and announcements. (Most of the teachers' pages are linked but a few are still under construction.) The PARENT RESOURCES button has links to important school documents. Use the SPORTS link on the homepage to access the latest schedules and information. We'd love to hear your suggestions for making the website more useful -please email Mary with suggestions.
Hello TGS Community! In preparation for the 50th Anniversary of TGS beginning next fall of 2010, we are launching a 50th Anniversary Logo Contest! Open to all TGS community members, the new logo will be a key feature when we roll out festivities for the celebration. We are seeking an image which incorporates our name, the bird (created by former parent Roger Sandes) and mention of the 50th (1960-2010) while at the same time celebrating the spirit that is TGS.
Contact Mark Green for the current logo/address. The winning entry will be decided by December 1st and the winner will receive a $100 gift certificate to either Front Porch, Heartstone Books or West Hill Shop. We will try to display all entries when the contest ends. All ages are welcome to participate. Good luck and thank you!
