- "PE News You Can Use!" -
September, 2011
| Greetings!:

Congrats to the new PEP Grantees! The names of the 2011 PEP Grant recipients were released today by the Department of Education.
A Time of Mixed Feelings: This is always a time of mixed feelings for me. I'm happy for the folks who have worked hard to get the funding they deserve, but I'm also disappointed for the many who have also been working extremely hard for numerous years as well - but were not funded.
Many kudos for those of you who were fortunate to be funded this year and a special "thanks" for those of you who will try again next year!
A complete listing of this year's PEP Grant winners can be found at the bottom of this e-mail.

"The Things That Haven't Been Done Before"
|
By Edgar Guest
The things that haven't been done before,
Those are the things to try;
Columbus dreamed of an unknown shore
At the rim of the far-flung sky,
And his heart was bold and his faith was strong
As he ventured in dangers new,
And he paid no heed to the jeering throng
Or the fears of the doubting crew.
The many will follow the beaten track
With guideposts on the way.
They live and have lived for ages back
With a chart for every day.
Someone has told them it's safe to go
On the road he has traveled o'er,
And all that they ever strive to know
Are the things that were known before.
A few strike out without map or chart,
Where never a man has been,
From the beaten path they draw apart
To see what no man has seen.
There are deeds they hunger alone to do;
Though battered and bruised and sore,
They blaze the path for the many, who
Do nothing not done before.
The things that haven't been done before
Are the tasks worthwhile today;
Are you one of the flock that follows, or
Are you one that shall lead the way?
Are you one of the timid souls that quail
At the jeers of a doubting crew,
Or dare you, whether you win or fail,
Strike out for a goal that's new?

National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month
September is "NATIONAL CHILDHOOD OBESITY AWARENESS MONTH." In the past four decades, obesity rates in the United States have soared among all age groups. This rise in obesity rates has affected our youth in alarming fashion. Childhood obesity has increased more than fourfold among those ages 6 to 11. CDC Health & Fitness Podcasts:This cool website features timely health and fitness podcasts in English and Spanish versions. I especially liked "Things You Can Do to Stay Away from the Flu." Did you know that CDC estimates that on any given year over 17,000 people in the United States die from the flu (deaths have ranged from 3,000 - 49,000 over the past 31 years)? Elementary PE Teacher Recognized: Eric Gunderson, a physical education teacher at Roosevelt Elementary School was selected out of 1,400 applicants to receive $2,000 grant from ING. He also received the title of "Unsung Hero." The vertical climbing wall in the school's gym is just one of the tools the 11-year teaching veteran is using to take physical education to new heights. "One of my goals being an educator here in Janesville is to turn them on to being active at a young age and hopefully they'll have a chance at being active when they are older," Gunderson said.
