staff New PEP Grant Requirements!
Background:  There are two items everyone should know about the Carol M. White PEP Grant program.  These include (1) new data collection requirements and (2) new application requirements.

Updated and New PEP Grant Data Requirements:
Please click on the above masthead graphic to go directly to our Blog.  It contains an update on the new 2010 Carol M. White PEP Grant data collection requirements that will be of interest to all new PEP Grantees.  A few of these new GPRA (Government Performance Results Act) requirements include:
  1. All grants serving K-12 students must collect physical activity data using two different assessments - Pedometers and a Three Day Physical Activity Recall Survey (3DPAR).
  2. Students in grades K-4 must use pedometers for a 4 day period. Daily total steps need be verified by parents and written on a take-home form designed by the school district.
  3. Students in grades 5-12 must use pedometers for a 7 day period. Daily total steps will be written down by students using a take-home form designed by the school district.
  4. Students in grades 5-12 must complete the 3DPAR with data to be scored and compiled by PE teachers and then compared to the individual student's pedometer data.
New PEP Grant Application Requirements: Last year there were a variety of substancial changes made to the PEP Grant application process including the following:
  1. Required online submission process.
  2. Required completion of School Health Index by all schools within the district.
  3. Required use of CDC's HECAT and PECAT tools.
  4. 10 BONUS POINTS: 5 extra points were awarded to school districts who were able to find at least four designated community partners to coordinate grant activities.  This also required signed letters of support. An additional 5 points were awarded to school districts who agreed to gather student BMI data as a part of their grant application. To download a copy of the 2010 application, click HERE.
  5. Increased award amount of up to $2.25 million over a three year funding period.  This provides an additional $750,000 over the previous years' $1.5 million maximum award.

Courts Declare Parents Can Sue for More PE!
Based on a new California Court of Appeal's ruling in Sacramento, parents can now sue for a lack of physical education. For more information, click HERE.

California's education code requires elementary schools to offer 200 minutes of physical education every 10 days, an amount that rises to 400 minutes in middle or high schools, not including lunch or recess.

Last year, a parent in the Albany school district believed Cornell Elementary wasn't meeting that minimum and sued the district to force it to offer the required physical education, said Donald Driscoll, the parent's attorney.

The parent was not identified in the lawsuit to ensure anonymity of the children. Driscoll said "Now there's a mechanism for enforcing the law."
Bellingham Parents Sue Over PE Cuts!
(BELLINGHAM, WA) - Parents in Bellingham have challenged the School District's plan to make cuts in the elementary school physical education program. "Save Our Schools Bellingham" says the plan would reduce the amount and quality of the PE program to levels and standards below those required by state law.  If the legal appeal is upheld, the Board of Directors could be forced to rescind their decision and comply with the state requirements for physical education for grades 1 - 8.
