RosesFor the Love of Roses NewsletterThanks to
everyone who attended our Rose Festival last weekend. We enjoyed having
Joel Schraven speak so knowledgeably about growing roses in Ontario,
and a special thanks to Trish McGibbon for demonstrating different
arrangements that can be done with roses and other plants from our
garden. Photos |

Fruit Trees
Now that the fruit is setting on most trees, the anticipation of harvest is high!
Tanglefoot Red Sphere Traps
- lures flies away from fruit trees as they search for egg-laying sites - thinking the red traps are ripe fruit, the flies land and attempt to deposit eggs and become stuck - apple maggot fly infests pears, apples, apricots, hawthorns and plum, newly-hatched larvae tunnel through the fruit, causing brown streaks in the flesh - trapping the female flies during the egg-laying cycle reduces the damage to fruit also works with the cherry fruit worm for cherries

Green Earth Horticultural Oil Insect Spray

Hosta
Hostas are a wonderful family adding different heights, colours and textures to shady and part-shady areas in the garden.
Hostas are easy to maintain and make a strong design statement in any garden bed or container.
However, some varieties can be susceptible to slug damage.
|
Safer's Slug and Snail Killer
- for use around vegetables, perennials, fruit trees, berries, ornamentals (shrubs, flowers, trees) and lawns against slugs and snails in greenhouses and outdoors - will not harm pets, birds or wildlife - apply the bait evenly at approx 2 g per square meter on the soil around or near the plants to be protected from slugs or snails - product may be dispensed directly from the container to small areas as a spot treatment or can be applied using a handheld spreader - circling the garden plot or plant/shrubs/trees with bait effectively creates a barrier to slugs and snails
Product available at the Dufferin Garden Centre.

Lily species (Lilium) Lily of the Valley (Convallaria), Solomon's Seal (Polygonatum) as well as the Fritillary (Fritillaria)
Red Lily Beetle
- newly hatched larvae feed on the underside of leaves while mature larvae feed on the upper surface of the leaves - larvae cause most of the damage and spend 2-3 weeks stripping the foliage, then the flower buds before dropping to the soil to pupate. - after 2-3 weeks, the adult beetles emerge to start eating again - hand-picking should be the first level of control if possible - constant vigilance and quick removal and disposal of beetles, eggs and larvae can control an infestation on a small number of plants - Neem Oil will repel beetles and kill young larvae - best to apply every 5 to 7 days after the eggs hatch
Product available at the Dufferin Garden Centre.

Cedar's Corner
Hey Pint-Sized Potters, have I got a job for you! Do you like to eat...I know I do! The next time you have scrambled eggs, don't let Mom and Dad throw out the egg shells...I have a special place for them. Did you have a nice big glass of milk with your scrambled eggs? Your milk (and other milk products) contains mineral called calcium which helps to build strong bones, teeth and is needed for muscle growth. Where else can you find calcium?...In whole grains, green vegetables, sardines, salmon, soybeans and peanuts.
Do you know who else needs calcium? Tomatoes do! They need them for cell growth and division. When tomatoes (and peppers) don't get enough calcium, they have underdeveloped leaves and blossom-end rot. This is when the end of the fruit doesn't develop properly causing a dark, flattened or sunken leathery-appearing spot, sometimes including half the fruit.
Time to feed your plants! Adding those crushed egg shells from your breakfast around the base of the tomatoes (and peppers) will certainly be a welcome addition. Or, add Hen Manure which has naturally occurring calcium (organic fertilizer).
While you are in the mode of feeding your plants, don't forget to replenish the nutrients of your other plants. Remember to give your hanging baskets and annuals a shot of fertilizer, such as Parkwood Transplant Fertilizer (10-15-10)...note the high middle number for roots and flowers. Now is also a good time to feed your lawn with Green Acres by Turf Revolution or Parkwood 21-6-12 Lawn Food.
Ahh, nice cool grass...perfect for summer fun! Let the games begin!
