Greetings!

"Forgiveness happens when we give up all hope for a better past." (variously attributed to Lily Tomlin, Gerald Jampolsky, and others)

"To forgive does not simply mean to arrive at a place of indifference to those who do personal injury to us; it means far more than this. To forgive is to give for- to give some actual, definite good in return for evil."

H. Emilie Cady, Lessons in Truth

You've heard it before: forgiveness is not for the person you believe has done you wrong. Forgiveness is actually a means of releasing ourselves from the bondage of ill will, a way of breaking our self-imposed chains of victimhood. A couple of newsletters ago, I wrote about victimhood. As long as we continue to believe that someone, or some thing, or some situation, or anything outside of us has harmed us, we are giving that person, situation, or circumstance power over us. We are claiming our own victimhood.

The good news, of course, is that since victimhood is self-inflicted, we have the power to release ourselves from it. We can release the past and move forward in a lighter, more aligned state. Last year, studying Rev. Gary Simmons' book, The I of the Storm, we invested considerable time with Jesus' commandment that we are to love our enemies, bless them, do good, and to pray for them. That book translates Jesus' words into do-able actions:

"To love means to accept, to embrace, to value. To bless means to endow something or someone with the capacity to be good in your life. To do good means to do the right thing. To pray means to give your thoughts to God. It's a four-step process toward your center - love, bless, do good, and pray."  -- I of the Storm, p. 42

What does this look like in real life? I invite you to join me as we put it into practice, right here and right now.

Become still. Allow yourself to turn away from all external distractions for a few very important minutes. Breathe into your heart center, and know that there is a common heartbeat shared in Oneness by all of us. We do not need to know how this works; we simply become willing to rest in that Wholeness that is Truth.

As you breathe, allow the person or situation you wish to forgive to come to your thoughts. If you are who you most need to forgive, allow yourself to do this as well. Continue to breathe as you consider this person or situation. Allow yourself to be willing to set aside your harsh judgment and be receptive to knowing something good about them. Perhaps the only thing you can come up with is that their mother surely loved them. Or that they treated their dog with kindness. Or they disposed of their trash responsibly. Allow that one good thing to come to mind.

Consider that one good thing to be a link of Oneness connecting you. Your mother also loved you. Or you are also kind to your animal companion. Perhaps they have a good quality that you admire and think is missing in yourself. Remember, if you can see it in someone else, you must have a "receptor" for that quality in yourself, which means it is there in potential.

As you value that one good thing, you are doing the work of loving them. As you recognize that one good thing, you are allowing them to be a blessing to you either by example or by reminding you of your own good quality. As you do that, you are endowing them with the capacity to be good in your life.

Continue to breathe and remain willing to do this work. It is important for you and it is important for them. Simply by doing this forgiveness, you are honoring the "do good" part of the instruction, and by giving of these good thoughts into Consciousness, you have prayed for the person or situation that you have considered your enemy.

Affirm, "My nature is Divine. I am God-As-Love-made-manifest, and I am willing to release this person or situation to their highest possible Good. I accept my own highest and best Good. As I release my past thoughts, I accept new, higher thoughts. I claim my birthright as powerful, wise, free Spirit. I place God first in my life. I turn within for guidance in all things. I share my abundance willingly, joyfully, and cheerfully. I am blessed and I am thankful."event

New Member Orientation Sessions

If you've been attending for awhile, and feel aligned with our community, please plan on attending one of our new member orientation sessions. We'll be accepting new members on Feb. 26th, which is the date of our annual membership meeting. Our final new member orientation prior to New Member Sunday will be right after church on Feb. 19th, and last about an hour. If you attended our Sunday lesson series focusing on living the Unity principles, you do not need to attend the whole session, you simply need to attend the first part, which will be a short video explaining a bit about Unity's history and governing bodies. Pick up a membership application at church, and either place it in the offering or give it to Nita or any Board member.
