2011 AIANYS Honor Awards Program-Deadline is November 30, 2011

The AIANYS Honor Awards program was instituted to provide appropriate recognition to individuals who have influenced the profession of architecture in New York State. These awards reflect notable contributions, outstanding service, or specific actions taken by architects, legislators, or organizations who demonstrate a pattern worthy of distinction. Members of the AIANYS Board of Directors or an AIANYS component may nominate eligible individuals per the AIANYS Award description.

AIANYS has put together a checklist to assist with preparing the nomination. Be sure to include it with your nomination, along with a CD that contains the documents in the nominee portfolio.

All nominations must be received at AIANYS by the close of business (5:00 PM) on November 30, 2011 and sent to AIANYS, 52 South Pearl Street, Third Floor, Albany, NY 12207.

AIANYS Names Two Legislators of the Year

AIANYS has named two Legislators of the Year: Senator Kenneth LaValle (R) and Assemblyman Ronald Canestrari (D). They are receiving this honor for their sponsorship of the Non-Design Professional Ownership bill which was recently signed into law. This has been one of AIANYS' top legislative priorities for many years. This bill authorizes non-licensed professionals to hold a minority share of ownership (not to exceed 25%) in architecture, landscape architecture, engineering or land surveying firms.

Three Percent Withholding Tax Mandate Repealed

The House has passed the final version of H.R. 674, to repeal the three percent withholding tax mandate.  This means Congress has approved a measure to repeal the three percent withholding tax mandate with an offset that enjoys bipartisan support and the Administration's support, as well. The bill repealing the three percent withholding provision will now go to the President for his signature.

Since 2007, close to 6,000 AIA members nationally have sent nearly 20,000 messages to Capitol Hill in support of repealing the three percent withholding law. The repeal is evidence that grassroots lobbying can have an impact. Thank you to all who participated!
