An Introduction to Universal Design
1 LU/HSW Hour
December 13, 2011
10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.

Emerging in the mid 1990's, the philosophy of universal design initially focused on design to support independence and usability for a broader range of end users. However, in the last five years, the concept has undergone a transformation, with the realization that it has applicability to a much wider range of issues related to diversity and adding health and social participation outcomes to the earlier goals.

Registrants  will learn about the history of this design movement, its rationale in demographic and social changes, goals for practice, its relationship to accessibility codes, how it may impact those codes in the future, current research and development efforts, some leading examples in architecture, and efforts to develop of voluntary standards and certification programs.
