SANEA Johannesburg lecture
|
presented by Dennis Herold, chief executive officer LPGas Safety Association DATE: Tuesday 19 October 2010
Refreshments and snacks will be served before and after the lecture, and there is ample opportunity for networking with friends, colleagues and energy professionals.
Come and join the energy professionals at SANEA for an evening of provocation and challenge, to learn more about energy options for South Africa, debate the issues, and get some answers! SYNOPSIS Peak demand times can be seen to be when the majority of South Africans are preparing morning and evening meals and this is further exacerbated during the winter months when the need for warmth becomes paramount. Currently, outside of electricity, much focus is being placed on wind and solar as alternative energy sources. However, LPGas is a 'here and now' energy which does not require research and/or development. It is available and has proven itself, internationally, for many years. In fact, it's often the fuel of choice for cooking, water and space heating. So, what is preventing it from offering the same safe, efficient and affordable solution to South Africa's energy woes?
BRIEF CV OF PRESENTER Dennis Herold has been the CEO of the LPGas Safety Association for the past eighteen months. He studied law at the University of Natal and has a management diploma from the Gordon Institute of Business Studies. He is a non-executive director of the SA Qualification and Certification Committee for Gas. Since joining the LPGas Safety Association, Dennis has focussed on encouraging 'best business practices' throughout the industry and on promoting the safe use of LPGas as an ideal alternative energy carrier. SANEA Durban lecture
|
On behalf of the South African National Energy Association (SANEA), you are invited to attend an evening lecture in Durban, entitled: THE STATE-OF-PLAY IN ELECTRICITY REGULATION & POLICY IN SA REGARDING IPPs presented by Doug Kuni, managing director
SA Independent Power Producers Association (SAIPPA) DATE: Wednesday 13 October 2010 TIME: 17h30 for 18h00 VENUE: Magnet Gp, 48 Hannah Road, Umbilo (off Sydney Road), Durban COST: Free-of-charge, including drinks and snacks
SYNOPSIS Much has been spoken about IPPs entering the SA power scene in the last 5 years. While NERSA has tried to do what is possible within the current policy framework, the current policy does not clarify the role of IPPs and how they will participate in the future. The future structure of the electricity industry is key to unlocking the potential of IPPs in the marketplace, and this clarity must be provided as a strong signal that SA is serious about attracting private capital in power generation. The period from 2011 onwards will reveal how short SA is of power generation capacity. If the dominant market player is unable to fund further capacity expansion, SA's economy will be severely handicapped and growth targets will accordingly be compromised. BRIEF CV OF PRESENTER Doug Kuni is a mechanical engineer (London University). He joined Eskom in 1984 and has 15 years experience in design, construction, commissioning, testing, O&M of large power stations. He was Eskom's corporate communications manager during the first democratic elections in SA in 1994, and the some years in Eskom Enterprises doing power asset acquisitions in Africa. He joined a Hong Kong based company in 2004 acquiring supply chain assets in the power sector of China. He returned to SA and joined IPSA in 2006 as general manager in SA, and licensed Newcastle Cogeneration (Pty) Ltd in 2008 to supply power into the grid. He is now MD of the SA Independent Power Producers Association (SAIPPA) and an independent power sector consultant consulting to major corporations in SA and internationally.
