Ohio-ACC News                     July 2010
Robert E. Hobbs, MD, FACCPresident's Message
Robert E. Hobbs, MD, FACC

I receive a lot of email as I am sure you do. One email that I received struck a chord with me, and I would like to share it with you. I received the message via the ACC Governors' listserv from my colleague Thomas A. Haffey, DO, FACC, who is the Colorado ACC Governor. Here it is:

"One of my early observations as a governor is that communication with legislators is a process not an event. Repeated contacts, not one sole visit seem to garner the most impact. It seems to be that it is not a single meeting but the sixth or seventh or tenth meeting when the light-bulb goes on and they finally realize who you are and who you represent. This is an alien concept to most of our colleagues who are geared to an almost immediate solution to whatever complex cardiac problem that is presented to us. We need to plant the seeds to Congress that we are there to help them, not be disappointed in a perceived lack of activity, and try and develop a personal relationship with the medical experts in their offices."

With that message in mind, I invite you and urge you to join me in Washington, DC, for the ACC's Legislative Conference
to be held September 12-14, at the Fairmont Hotel. We will spend a day learning about the legislative issues facing us, and then we will bring our message to Capitol Hill. If you have never done this sort of thing, I can tell you that it is quite an experience. Take the time to make a difference.

Walk with a Doc
David Sabgir, MD, FACC, Founder, Walk with a Doc

We have the cure...right in front of us.

As physicians we know how to patch up lifestyle-related diseases with pills, insulin, surgery, etc. But also as doctors, we have a foot in the door.  We have a foot in the door to eliminate these illnesses before they ever occur.  I'm talking about Walk with a Doc.

You and I both know our patients still listen to us.  We know our patients respect us. We know our patients want to spend time with us. We can empower them.  We can change their lives dramatically for the better. We have the power to improve their blood pressure, cholesterol profile, prevent strokes, heart attacks, breast cancer, colon cancer, etc. We know there are 40+ diseases we can destroy.

You, by virtue of being a physician, hold the power to get them this treatment. They will listen to you. And, for the first time, they will start exercising. They will bring their family, their friends, their neighbors, and their out-of-town visitors. They will exercise regularly and they will give you credit.

Isn't this why we all went to medical school? To save lives.  To earn trust. To make a difference.  Your efforts will be rewarded immediately

It is right in front of us, and it's embarrassingly easy.

Ohio physicians - the system is in place. There is no cost, and there is no catch. We can get you a free toolkit, free website, free prescription pads, join an existing walk, or start your own. We can make it happen, and we can make it easy. Contact us at 614-714-0407 or visit www.walkwithadoc.org.
Medicare Proposed Rule for 2011
The proposed rule is out! The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) late Friday released its proposed 2011 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule, which includes both payment and payment policy proposals for all physician services. Overall, the rule does not include any egregious policy proposals on the scale of those included in the 2010 rule. That being said, while there were some positives, cardiovascular professionals will continue to feel the downstream impacts of policies that were finalized in the 2010 rule. As in past years, increases and cuts for cardiovascular services are dependent on the services provided by the practice. Find out more.
Ohio Casinos to Be Smoke Free
Last month, the Ohio Legislature passed a bill to regulate the new Ohio casinos.  Included in the bill was the commitment to the casinos being smoke free!  While other states fight over the smoking status of their casinos, Ohio's will be smoke free.
New Designation for CCAs: A.A.C.C.
The Associate of the American College of Cardiology designation was approved by the ACC's Board of Trustees in March 2009, to recognize those CCAs who, through advanced education, training and professional development, have dedicated themselves to providing the highest-level of cardiovascular care. CathPCI Registry Skills Workshop Held

The Ohio-ACC and the Ohio Thoracic and Cardiovascular Data Management Group recently hosted a hands-on workshop for CathPCI Registry participants from surrounding states. Seventy-two participants from Ohio, Kentucky, Michigan and Wisconsin attended the conference in May, which was designed to provide understanding and competence surrounding the CathPCI Registry data definitions and registry features. Tony Hermann, R.N., M.B.A., C.P.H.Q., associate director for CathPCI Registry, was the featured speaker. The one-day seminar began with multiple CathPCI Registry case studies created by the participants and a pre-test which gauged the audience member's existing knowledge of the registry using an automated response system. During the workshop, Mr. Hermann discussed history and risk factors; functional testing; STEMI and D2B; procedural information, lesions and devices; and complications. The workshop concluded with a post test, which yielded extremely positive results, showing a significant increase in registry-related knowledge among attendees. Get the complete re-cap, including photos and presentations.
