Burglary of a Vehicle - 90  for the year.  Last year's total (2008) was about 125.  2007 was 156.
Tell your neighbors that most of these burglaries could have been prevented by one simple thing that does not cost any money and does not require any anti-theft devices.
Take your stuff out of your vehicles.

Aggravated Robbery with a Deadly Weapon
In my last newsletter of 11/23, I reported a robbery at the Ross store on Burnet that happened on a Friday at 3:00pm on November 6th.  A man who shopped at Ross went to his car, and two Hispanic men approached and showed a gun.  They took $400.    Recently, I learned that a detective assigned to the case has not been able to make contact with the victim. The case is on hold until the victim contacts APD.  "Aggravated" means the crime involved showing a weapon.

This now concerns me because I am seeing more Aggravated Robberies and some are a little too close for comfort.  There are a large number that happen throughout the whole city every month.  In our neck of the woods, it happens each month mostly in areas such as Lamar, Rundberg, Brownie Dr, Clayton Ln, etc.  But now I see several closer to our boundaries that are recent since November.  I looked back to July on the Krimelabb database, I see no others this close to us.  This is definitely something to be monitored.  Here is a sampling of what I see:

*****ROB  11/06/2009 - 8100 Burnet Rd-Ross Store FRI 3:00pm -Customer robbed
ROB  11/07/2009 - 8885 Research NB- Near Northgate Blvd,  pedestrian victim  SAT 3:30

ROB  12/06/2009 - 10925 Stonelake - Homestead Suites - SUN 1:30pm female robbed in parking lot
ROB  12/07/2009 - 9100 Burnet Rd - Jack In the Box on Burnet at Rutland - MON 6:45pm cust robbed in parking lot
ROB  12/08/2009 - 3435 Greystone - Pizza Hut - TUESDAY 7:30pm  Store was robbed
*****ROB  12/10/2009 - 2931 Anderson - Mr. Gattis - THURSDAY 7:30pm -THIS IS NEXT TO SUN HARVEST!  A Driver for Mr. Gattis was parked in her car smoking a cigarette during a break.  Robber w. gun walked up and stole money plus her cell phone. Other businesses over there have been put on alert.

Homeless People
sleeping near the Pillow Grounds in a vehicle was reported to police.  If you walk around Pillow at night, please bring a cell phone with you.  Report any activity on the playground or in cars to APD immediately.  They will be doing directed patrols between midnight and dawn.  APD's Air One helicopter will be searching the ground at night for campfires on vacant or secluded land to try to locate some of the homeless camps that spring up around us.

Suspicious Person  seen on Kerrybrook and reported by resident on
11/22 around 8:30pm sitting parked on that street.  The drivers behavior after being spotted by resident was unusual.  This car was also seen several days later driving around Penny Lane by another resident.

White 1988 Toyota Celica CT (click HERE
to see what car would look like).  White Male, early 20's was wearing a white "hoodie" style jacket, maybe 5'9" or so.  LICENSE PLATE #Y97MCY.   Registration on this car is out of date from 2007 and it is registered to a hispanic female in Dallas.

Note:
As always, I do not print information about domestic violence or harrassment here unless I feel that it is pertinent to the safety of the neighborhood. I do not want anyone to hesitate in calling APD about their situation for fear that it will show up in a neighborhood newsletter.

Sidewalk Safety

One of the most helpful strategies for reducing neighborhood crime is by walking.  The presence of pedestrians can deter crime if we are actively watching and listening while enjoying the fresh air and scenery.

We often talk about children walking to school and their safety, but what about our oldest kids in the neighborhood?  Kids like Margaret Flanniken on Stillwood.  She is 75 years young and has been walking this neighborhood each morning before her day starts.

Unfortunately back in August, Margaret sustained a bad fall on a stretch of sidewalk.  That cracked sidewalk caused a fractured knee, completely immobilizing her for two months.

As it turns out, that stretch of sidewalk is pretty notorious for causing injuries. Another of our seniors fell there two years ago and broke two teeth.  She later discovered that a piece of tooth had lodged in her tongue and she underwent several oral surgeries to repair the damage to her mouth, among other injuries.  Earlier this year, another resident's mother-in-law was visiting and decided to take a stroll.  That 72 year old woman fell on the same spot as Margaret, causing pain and injury.

Enough is enough.  These sidewalks are mostly 30 to 40 years old and it's time to get them fixed.   A big part of the problem is that we as a neighborhood have not done our part to get the city's attention!!

Colly Kreidler to the Rescue

I recently spoke with Colly Kreidler, City of Austin Public Works Department, Street and Bridge Division.  He described a procedure for getting our sidewalk problems on their radar.

Click here to read Colly Kreidler's answers to questions about sidewalk repair. . . . .

Thanks to Pat Sullivan of Millway, Briana Hinchey and her son Aiden of Mossrock Dr, Joel Daniels of Mossrock Dr, and Cheryl Carter of Flagstone, we are almost done with  an inventory of all sidewalk repair problems within our neighborhood.  This includes Rockwood, Steck, Daleview, Millway, Mossrock, Dawnridge, Crosscreek, Winding Walk, Benbrook, Stillwood, Briarwood, Stanwood, Charlwood, Flagstone and Shoal Creek Blvd and Penny Ln.  It also includes the sidewalks around the perimeter of Pillow Elementary.

These will all be called in to 311 to ensure that the needed repairs are all in the City's system and a spreadsheet handed over to Colly.  I will be personally monitoring the progress of these repairs to see how much the City can do and the type of repairs they can make.  The City of Austin still has funding for sidewalk repair left over from the Nov 2006 Bond Issue that was approved by voters.  It's 2009!  Time for us to finally get this done.

What can you do to help?
Please take a look at your own sidewalk.  Make your own call to 311 and report cracks or buckling that could cause someone to trip.  This will give the city an immediate record of who the homeowner is and their contact information.   Keep your sidewalks free of debris (acorn shells, gravel and loose ashalt can cause slips) and trim grass growing through the cracks.  Some residents have planted shrubs or other vegetation on either side of the sidewalk or vines hanging from fencelines.  Keep these trimmed back to allow for easy pass through without scratching or snagging clothes.   Look for overhead branches that hang down and pose a threat for people passing by.   PODS or storage bins should not be placed in the way of the sidewalk.  Code Enforcement will make certain that these are moved.

Did you know
* 30% of people age 65 and older are involved in falls each year, the leading cause of death from unintentional injury in the home?

*In the US and Canada, adults age 65 and older make up about 12% of the population - and their numbers are increasing.  We have a substantial number living within our neighborhood boundaries.

We have an obligation to look out for all our residents whether it's a mother attempting to negotiate these sidewalks with a stroller, a small child on the way to Pillow or one of our many oldest 'kids' just wanting to get out and exercise.  We should be supporting this activity with our actions and not just our words.  Do your part with your own sidewalk and make the neighborhood safer for all of us.

Neighborhood Artist Works on Display

Many of you know Cathy Ellard, 5th grade teacher at Pillow who also lives in our neighborhood.   She was a Board member of NSCNA until this fall when she needed to devote more time to teaching related activites.  Earlier this year, she received the distinction of being given the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching administered on behalf of the White House by the National Science Foundation.

But did you know what an accomplished artist she is?  If you would like to see
more of her works on display for the rest of the month visit Food! Food! - a local gourmet takeout and eatery that is across from Casis Elementary School on Exposition Blvd - next door to the Randall's store.

The artwork is reasonably priced and has won several awards.
A Message from Our Central West District Reps Office  12/14/2009

It's the most wonderful time of the year... at least in popular song and in our idea as to what the winter holiday season should be like. Unfortunately it is also the most wonderful time of the year for thieves and robbers. That being said the Central West District Representatives would like to take a moment of your time to remind you of the things you can do to ensure that this indeed will be a wonderful time of the year for you and your family.

Lock Take and Hide: remember the golden rule of Burglary of Vehicle prevention "Lock Take and Hide. The interior of your car should look like it did the day you drove it off of the car dealers lot: Empty of all personal items, goods, change, mail, purses, laptops, GPS systems, garage door openers, shopping bags, I-pods, I-phones, MP-3 Players, in car video systems, game-boys... and even sweaters, jackets, shoes, alcohol bottles or cans, sleeping bags and or blankets, yoga mats... when you look into your car from the outside it should appear clean and empty.
Also if you are out shopping and take packages back to your car hide the packages in the trunk and then move your car to a new parking spot. There are theft rings that will follow you in the stores and watch what you buy then relay that information to others in the parking lot so they can watch you go to your car, the thieves will either mug you for the goods while you are walking to your car so make sure you have at least one hand free and that you are not trying to carry to much. Or the thieves will watch you put items in your car and go back into the mall or store, when you do that they will break into your car and take the items you just purchased. Also keep your receipts separate from your packages so thieves can not take the items back for exchange for cash.

Con games are being played: There are several con/scam artists that are operating in the city at this time some are in the guise of magazine sales persons (though not all are criminals) who will use this con to get access to your home. Be leery of door to door solicitors no matter what they are selling or canvassing for. Never let anyone into your home nor allow them the opportunity to peer past your front door and into your home to see what goods you have.
Post no Soliciting signs on your door or at the end of your drive way. If someone comes to your home that is suspicious and or if you have a posted sign please call 9-1-1 to report the activity.

Blind con man in area: Just a word of caution there is a Black Male about 5-9 6-0 foot tall short hair, light beard walks with a cane and pretends to be completely blind. This individual will walk out in traffic trying to get someone to stop to help him cross the street. He will then tell a sob story trying to get a ride and some money from the person who stopped him.

Homeless (not so homeless): As you drive around town you will notice a large number of alleged homeless individuals begging for money with catchy signs staying that they are vets or need money for what ever they are begging for. We caution giving money to anyone on the street as this does little to help them do anything but continue the vicious cycle of addiction. If you want to give money to the homeless please donate to the organizations that are founded on helping everyone get a home or the help they need. Veterans and those who served in the military have lots of VA avenues they can take to get the aid they need, there are several VA clinics in the Austin area especially founded to aid the homeless.

Home for the Holidays: A reminder to everyone to please drive safely during this holiday season, our weather is changing almost by the hour making for some hazardous driving conditions so please be careful. Also please, if you drink alcohol, do so responsibly, do not drink and drive, have a designated driver or set up transportation to get you and your family home safely.
Law enforcement will be out this holiday season looking for traffic violations, so please drive safely, so you and your family and everyone can have a happy holiday season.

Be safe
The Central West District Representatives
