Issue: 7                       Perception - A Work in Progress
August 2010
Greetings!

A warm welcome to the August newsletter on the theme of  'Perception: A Work in Progress' from a still fabulous Ontario summer! I wish you the best with all your fresh beginnings in September. Check out what's NEW for the Fall offerings. Registration for seminars has begun!

My gifts to you this time consist of two different articles.  "Window on the World" invites you, through my personal story and reflective questions, to contemplate the nature and role of perception in your life. As usual, I've added suggestions for practical application.

"Cleanse the Doors of Perception" offers you the possibility  to explore samplings from various fields of inquiry. You will find an extended version of the article below on my website.

Fall tends to be a time for review and new endeavours. Find out more about the transformative Mini-retreats & Intensives, which are completely customized to your needs.

Feel free to contact me with any of your questions or requests.
Window on the World

What's YOUR window on the world? What colours and shapes your perceptions? How do your perceptions reflect back to you the world you see? How are your perceptions linked to your knowledge, assumptions, beliefs and experiences? And what does that tell you about your understanding of truth?

In preparation for a recent talk on transformative experiences, I recalled poignant moments from my teenage years that illustrated for me the particular nature of my windows on the world at the time although much of that, and its wider implications, I only grasped gradually. Let me tell you the story:

I grew up in a swindow - Hans Peter Frehner mall rural town in Germany, West-Germany at the time, a place my parents still call home. Due to my cousin Ulrich's diligent passion in genealogy, we know that both sides of my family tree have been rooted for centuries in the same small town. Although I couldn't quite articulate it then, I felt bound and stuck by the world into which I was born. I was longing for more depth and breadth and spaciousness.

"I live in a very small house. But my windows look out on a very large world," says Confucius. Well, It seemed that the only window I knew was a tiny, heavily obstructed window looking out on a very small slice of the world. No wonder I liked school as it held for me the promise of adding more windows to my house that would enlarge my view. And no wonder I couldn't wait to start grade 5 at the 'Gymnasium' (the academic high school) in the nearby bigger city. My new beginnings, and the potential to gain an expanded view of the world coincided with my home town's 1200th anniversary in 1967. READ ON.
Cleanse the Doors of Perception

Now that we have contemplated how to enlarge our window on the world, we need to consider how to keep it clean. Why? Because, as William Blake's aphorism suggests, "If the doors of perception were cleansed
everything would appear to man as it is - infinite."

I don't know about you, but the sensdoore of endless possibilities excites and motivates me.

So, here are some ideas that appeal to me to keep my windows on the world clean. Of course, all my usual Getting UnStressed & UnStuck suggestions and much more could fit here as well.

1) Apply Rule Number Six"Don't take yourself so damned seriously," as Rosamund and Benjamin Zander suggest in their wonderful book The Art of Possibility. I highly recommend the thoughtful, entertaining and practical ideas the authors put forth.

2) Have you ever heard of the 'one-buttock' technique for shifting your action and therefore your perception? Well, here is your chance. Get a sense of Ben Zander's wit and unique approach to "looking at life with a squint" by indulging in this short video that demonstrates Zander's take on the practical application of awakening possibilities.

2) "Reality doesn't bite. It's our perception of reality that bites," says Anthony J. D'Angelo. So, if you feel the pain from the bite or the sting, take a breath and first anchor yourself. See or imagine what aspect of your perception at that moment might be causing you pain. Picture somebody else in your place. Imagine how you could offer up a new or differing perspective or possibility to that person. Then apply it to yourself and see what happens.

The story known as "The Rabbi's Gift" serves as a brilliant example here. It illustrates how just envisioning a particular possibility encourages and nourishes amazing shifts in perception, behaviour and action.

3) Re-awaken and strengthen your sense of awe, wonder and mystery, which feeds your heart and soul. After all, "It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye." - Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

For more ideas on the subject, references to other sources and a collection of wise words for your leisurely contemplation, visit my website. If you have ideas or kernels of wisdom to share, I invite you to post them on Martina's Musings or on my Facebook page, or email them to me.

Most of all, proceed with care, compassion and gentleness in all of your cleansing efforts. May your windows and doors open wide on the Infinite.
It's obvious that this eclectic presentation has barely scratched the surface of such a complex topic. However, I trust my reflections and questions have stimulated a few fruitful associations for you.

I look forward to hearing your stories and experiences. As always, I welcome your personal comments and the more public sharings on
Martina's Musings. There you can post shorter items on your "Work in Progress" through which you bring greater spaciousness, creativity, harmony and peace into your life.

Review and Renew
Take Time for a Mini-Retreat

review and retreat

Mini-Retreats - your chance to review and renew - take place at Martina's Mews in Kitchener, Ontario. They offer you a safe and sacred space in which to open up to a transformative process that can unfold fully in its own time and rhythm.

You have the luxury of treating yourself to explorations and discoveries that take more time than brief appointments. You receive my undivided attention and presence for however long you have scheduled your retreat - between ONE and THREE days.

You are in charge of setting the agenda for your retreat, which we can revisit often and revise as we go along. I will support you in attaining your goals while I hold the space for you, set and maintain safe and healthy boundaries, and listen to the silence between your words just as intently and intensely as to your words.

When might you wish to arrange a Mini-Retreat?

A) A mini-retreat might be ideal for you if you are looking to work on a larger framework for your life, either personal or professional.

B) You might prefer uninterrupted longer periods of time rather than one-hour appointments to create the desired shifts in your life and find the solutions you are seeking.

C) You are from out of town, province or country and would prefer to work in person rather than over the phone.

D) You simply want to treat yourself well by looking after yourself and your needs in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere.

E) You desire an array of practical tools with which you can continue to help yourself after the retreat.
