Moving Forward in Alabama
While many employers are hesitant to add workers, Toyota Motor Manufacturing Alabama (TMMAL) is moving forward and preparing for expansion.
TMMAL, located in Huntsville, AL , has been in production since 2003. They currently build V6 and V8 engines for Toyota pickup trucks made in America. Beginning in 2011 they will also build four-cylinder engines. That means more jobs and economic growth for Alabama.
TMMAL currently has around 800 employees and they will soon need to hire an additional 240 team members, bringing their total employees to over 1000.
With the expectation that gas prices will rise in future, so to will the demand for 4-cylinder engines. The expansion in Huntsville will help TMMAL meet the needs of this increasing demand. Eventually TMMAL will produce 216,000 4-cylinder engines a year at the Huntsville plant and will be the only facility under the Toyota brand to produce three engines (V-8, V-6, and V-4) in one location.
Hiring for the expansion will begin in the Fall 2010. According to Stephanie Deemer, Toyota External Affairs, TMMAL will be hiring production and (skilled) maintenance workers. "We are looking for people with good problem-solving skills and the ability to work in teams. The Toyota Production System empowers our team members to take ownership of their process and continually improve. Our top priorities are safety, quality and respect for people," she stated.

TMMAL will offer competitive benefits and hourly wages will range from $15.85 to $26.00. The hiring process will be the same as with previous jobs. "We work closely with our partners at AIDT for assistance throughout our hiring process. We will utilize the same process we have used for past projects which will include a phone survey, realistic job preview and pre-hire training and assessments," Deemer explained.
Alabama Governor Bob Riley says, "Toyota's investment in Alabama is an example of what happens when we create an environment in which business can succeed and offer the best-trained, most flexible workforce you'll find anywhere in the world."
This expansion will bring TMMAL's total capital investment in Alabama to more than $640 million with an annual payroll exceeding $68 million. Now that's moving forward.
