CATAWBA SUSTAINABILITY CENTER

"A partnership-based center offering opportunities for education, training, business development and research in sustainable land management and low impact living."

The Catawba Sustainability Center is a 377-acre tract of scenic farm and forest land located near Route 311 in northwestern Roanoke County.  Deeded to Virginia Tech in 1988, the farm was first used for research and educational purposes by the College of Agriculture.  After a decade of limited use, Virginia Tech partnered with landowner-led Catawba Landcare in 2007 to provide an example of the benefits of sustainable farming and the promotion of environmental stewardship in the community.

Catawba Farm

To address issues of sustainability and continue serving the community and university, the Catawba Sustainability Center employs a 3-pronged approach that includes 1) community engagement and outreach, 2) learning and discovery and 3) land-based business incubation (VT EarthWorks).

Farmers Market Tomatoes

VT EarthWorks has partnered with Catawba Valley General Store to host a weekly farmers' market on Thursdays from 3:30-7:00PM.  The Farmers' Market opens May 27, 2010.
