Dear ,
"To me there are three things everyone should do every day. Number one is laugh. Number two is think -- spend some time time in thought. Number three, you should have your emotions move you to tears. If you laugh, think, and cry, that's a heck of a day." --Jim Valvano With today's newsletter, I will try to help you accomplish Jim's definition of a "heck of a day."
Number One: Laugh Something to at least make you smile, anyway. We've got the Call for Abstracts live on the AWRA website for the 2011 AWRA Spring Specialty Conference on "Managing Climate Change Impacts on Water Resources"! The deadline to submit is November 11, 2010. Number Two: Think Put your thinking cap on because AWRA has a survey out there ... one for members, one for nonmembers, and we really, really would like to have your input. Check your membership status above, then click on the appropriate link (if you haven't already completed it). There's an opportunity to enter for a complimentary full registration to the Annual Conference if you complete the survey. We'll close the surveys and draw the winning names on October 6. Thank you for your thoughtful responses. We truly appreciate it. Number Three: Cry

This American Water Resources Association (AWRA) specialty conference will bring together decision-makers, water managers and technical professionals from federal, state, and local agencies, academia, non-governmental organizations and the private sector to focus on the following key questions:
- What climate adaptation strategies, decision-making approaches, planning and evaluation methods do water managers and water professionals need to prepare for climate change impacts on water resources?
- What kinds of assessment and planning approaches do we need, what kind of solutions may be available, how much will they cost, what kinds of institutional adaptation may be necessary, and what might be the environmental and socioeconomic impacts and considerations that need to be taken into account?
While this conference is intended to bring together a wide range of decision-makers, managers, scientists, engineers and others, our desire is to weave three specific concepts throughout the conference:
- Enabling informed decision making under heightened uncertainty
- Assessment of climate change impacts in light of technical issues and other water management drivers
-
Developing robust and flexible adaptive management approaches

12201 Sunrise Valley Dr., Reston, VA Turning the Tide on the Chesapeake Bay
By Peter Claggett and Scott Phillips
The Chesapeake Bay has long been a place for DC area residents to escape city stress and relax. However, the 17 million people in the Bay watershed have contributed to its decline over the past several decades. But a new optimism has spread among scientists and managers working to restore the Bay. Join Scott Phillips and Peter Claggett of the USGS Chesapeake Bay studies, as they discuss new science and cooperation that is being applied to restore the Nation's largest estuary and its watershed.
Study on payments to landowners for watershed-friendly land management
With support from USDA and the U.S. Endowment for Forestry and Communities, EcoAgriculture Partners is conducting a study on payments for watershed services (PWS) projects and programs in the United States. The study will document schemes that compensate farm, ranch, and forest landowners for watershed-friendly land management practices. The focus is on programs initiated by local governments, water providers, or the private sector. We are eager to hear from you if you have knowledge of PWS schemes or have participated as a seller, buyer, or intermediary. Please fill out this brief, ten question survey or contact Terhi Majanen .
