Dear ,
"Dolphins! They think they're so cute. Oh, look at me, I'm a flippy little dolphin! Let me flip for you!" Chum in Finding Nemo
I just returned from my summer vacation in the low country of South Carolina ... Edisto Island to be exact. While I was there, my daughter and I took an early morning paddle from the sound to the channel, then up one of the inlets just as low tide was ebbing and high tide was thinking about flowing. The paddle was delightful enough ... blue skies, not too humid, calm water, good company ... but Ellie and I encountered a little bit of magic as well.
As we turned up the inlet, a pod of dolphin -- maybe 15, maybe 20 -- began feeding around us. We scooted over to one side of the inlet to give them space and watch, and we witnessed a feeding technique unique to this are: strand-feeding. The dolphin work in teams to "herd" their prey close to shore, then, with a "whoooosh" and a "splash," the dolphin shoves water, fish, and themselves up onto shore to catch the fish. It was amazing to watch! What a gift to be right there to see.
I later learned that these dolphin teach this feeding technique to their children and they pass it from one generation to the next. (There was at least one mother-baby pair that we saw).
Anyway ... I've already bored everyone here with this story, but I'm not tired of telling it, so you lucky folks get to hear it. too!
Here's a pic I snapped during one of the frenzies ... if you look closely, you can see a fish flapping just by the dolphin's mouth.

Comments Invited: US EPA Draft Strategy on
"Coming Together for Clean Water"
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is inviting the public to comment on the agency's draft strategy to protect and restore our nation's lakes, streams and coastal waters. The strategy, "Coming Together for Clean Water: EPA's Strategy for Achieving Clean Water," is designed to chart EPA's path in furthering EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson's key priority of protecting America's waters. EPA is now inviting the public to consider and provide their comments on the approaches outlined in the strategy. Public comments on the draft strategy should be submitted by September 17. EPA will review all comments and post a final strategy later in the year.
Water and energy are closely connected -- saving water saves energy and reduces greenhouse gas emissions. To better understand these potential savings, the Pacific Institute developed WECalc. An easy-to-use online calculator, WECalc evaluates the energy and greenhouse gas burden associated with your home water use -- and identifies strategies to reduce that burden. It asks a series of questions about your home water use habits, and based on your replies, estimates your water use and provides specific recommendations for reducing it.
USGS Public Lecture Series Megafloods in Metropolis: How Extreme Flooding Affects the Vulnerable and What You Can do to Reduce Your Loss
Wednesday, September 1, 2010, 7:00 PM USGS Headquarters, Dallas L. Peck Memorial Auditorium, Reston, VA
The Washington D.C. area has been spared major widespread flooding since Hurricane Fran left town about 14 years ago. But other cities in the eastern U.S. have been less fortunate lately. Atlanta's floods last year were so severe they defied scientific description. Flooding this year in Nashville inundated the Grand Ole Opry. USGS scientists Brian McCallum and Phil Turnipseed will discuss Atlanta's epic floods, Nashville's disaster, and the prospects and impacts of an extreme flood in the DC area. They will show new tools that can help residents and communities reduce losses from floods.
Earlier this month NOAA released a report on the fate of the oil from the BP Oil Spill. You can view their report at the link. |
