Dear ,
"You have to understand, my dears, that the shortest distance between truth and a human being is a story." --Anthony de Mello
It has been a HOT summer so far. Ask anyone here at the AWRA office, and they'll tell you ... if I think it's hot, that's saying something. This summer it has been too uncomfortably humid and sticky to spend much time out of doors where I prefer to be pretty much all day, everyday on the weekends. Out of a sense of self-preservation, I have taken to the indoors. I've created a little cave in the family room with the shutters closed, the lights off, and the a/c flowing (but not too much). It's perfect for watching movies, and I have a few recommendations for you while we collectively wait for the weather to break. Put these great documentaries on your Netflix queue and settle in:
T he Halliburton-developed drilling technology of "fracking" or hydraulic fracturing has unlocked a "Saudia Arabia of natural gas" just beneath us. But is fracking safe? When filmmaker Josh Fox is asked to lease his land for drilling, he embarks on a cross-country odyssey uncovering a trail of secrets, lies and contamination. This movie is also playing on HBO.
Blue Gold takes viewers through the causes of the water crisis -- mining, pollution, wetland destruction -- and blocks out the potential effects of a water shortage.
If you're not even sure that fighting to own water is possible, then Flow is a good film to start with; the award-winning documentary asks that exact question, and then sets about answering it through interviews with scientists and activists, and in-depth discussions of, as the film refers to it, "the growing privatization of the world's dwindling freshwater supply."
Poisoned Waters from Frontline takes a look at how the water crisis affects the US. It explores the health of Puget Sound and the Chesapeake Bay and uses them as barometers for the overall quality of the nation's fishing areas-then explains why clean water is such a critical part of our lives and those of our marine life. You can actually watch this one online, if you don't want to go out to the mailbox.
Thirst asks the question: "Is water a human right or a commodity to be bought and sold in a global marketplace?" It's currently available online through PBS's P.O.V. series.
Stay cool, and enjoy the waning days of summer!

Coastal Restoration for Gulf
Read the open letter to Ray Mabus, Secretary of the Navy, published in today's editions of Roll Call, Politico, Times-Picayune, and The Baton Rouge Advocate, from the America's WETLAND Foundation (AWF), which was joined by The Nature Conservancy, Environmental Defense Fund, the National Wildlife Federation, Ducks Unlimited, National Audubon Society, and the Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana. They applaud his recent visit to the Gulf region to listen to those closest to the Deepwater Horizon disaster and who have been a part of restoration planning for many years. The ad points out that plans to divert fresh water and sediment from the Mississippi River back into the marshes have already been authorized by Congress but lack the necessary federal funding and requests Secretary Mabus to call for immediate funding and implementation of those plans. You can read the Times-Picayune article here.

Wednesday August 4, 2010, 7:00 PM Hidden Treasures in a Troubled Nation: Science for Afghanistan's Future Dr. Jack Medlin, USGS Afghanistan Project lead
Dallas L. Peck Memorial Auditorium I Reston, VA
Recent news reports have brought worldwide attention to Afghanistan's mineral wealth and to the difficulties in bringing a range of commodities to market to rebuild that troubled land. But the mineral assessment is only a part of the story. Recent work by the USGS, the U.S. Navy, and others has made Afghanistan's subsurface among the best known places on Earth. Dr. Jack Medlin will tell the fascinating story about USGS science on energy, minerals, water, and natural hazards and what it means for Afghanistan's future.
Public Comment Period July 27 - September 1, 2010
The National Weather Service (NWS) is updating their strategic plan, and they like to hear what you have to say about their draft plan. Collecting comments is a very important step in the process as it will further strengthen partnerships and build upon the NWS goal of moving our weather, water, and climate services forward. You can read through the document and tell NWS what you think. The strategic plan represents the framework that will guide NWS over the next ten years. They request your help in making the NWS a more relevant, service-focused, agile organization, prepared to take on the challenges and opportunities of the future. |
