Dear ,
Due to an unanticipated viral attack on my computer here at work, I am under the gun to actually publish the June AWRA Connections in June! So, I will keep my comments very brief.
If you are involved in the helping clean up the Gulf Oil Spill and/or in the efforts to stop the oil gushing into the Gulf, please let us know what you are doing. You can either email me, or go to our Facebook page (link below).
Have a fabulous fourth of July weekend!

US Geological Survey Free Public Lecture Series
Wednesday, July 7, 2010 I Reston, VA
USGS's David Applegate will discuss lessons learned from this year's string of earthquake disasters in Haiti, Chile and elsewhere. Earthquakes and other geologic hazards are an inevitable aspect of life on this active planet, but their impacts on society are not. Hear how USGS is using new science and innovative technology to support emergency responders and help communities in the US increase their resilience before disaster strikes

For more than a decade, the National Ground Water Association has sponsored National Ground Water Awareness Week to promote groundwater and water well stewardship to the public. On September 14, NGWA will launch its first annual Protect Your Groundwater Day. As the title suggests, this day focuses solely on groundwater protection. NGWA will emphasize preventing contamination and water conservation as ways to protect groundwater resources. NGWA invites you to participate, so mark your calendars and visit the link for more information and some actionable steps you can take to protect your groundwater.
Open Access Journals
The June 2010 issue of the open-access journal, Water, is now online. The open-access journal Water Alternatives Special Issue on WCD+10: Revisiting the Large Dam Controversy is also now online. It's free, but you might have to register.
U Washington Water Center Closing
The UW Water Center will be closing on June 30, 2010 (that's today!) after 22 years in its various forms. This decision results from recent state budget cuts and changes in University of Washington program directions. While the Center is sunsetting, they have tried to preserve as many of the Center's resources as possible:
Effects of Urbanization on Stream Ecology
A new USGS report explains the effects of urban development on stream ecosystem health. Surprisingly, aquatic insect communities show little, if any, initial resistance to low levels of urban development that were previously thought to be protective of aquatic life. Land cover prior to urbanization can affect how aquatic insects and fish respond to urban development and is important to consider in setting realistic stream restoration goals in urban areas. Learn more about how stream ecosystems respond to urban development from USGS reports and video podcasts on the USGS website.
Full and partial-tuion scholarships are now available to study International WaterCentre's (IWC) Master of Integrated Water Management (Australia). The program takes a multi-disciplinary, whole-of-water cycle approach. The program equips students with the integration, leadership and managerial skills to become part of an elite group of water leaders with sustainable and holistic solutions to global water and climate change challenges. The program commences February 2011 and can be completed in 12 or 18 months full-time or 3 years in part-time/distance study mode.
