From Our Winning Team to Yours
Happy New Year. I trust you all enjoyed a pleasant and relaxing time off during the holidays with friends and family. Every January we have an outstanding opportunity to establish new goals and objectives and recommit ourselves to taking our companies to even higher ground. The economic climate over the past couple of years has stymied many organizations as demand for their products and services waned. In response, staff may have been reduced and the cycle of diminishing returns initiated. A new year brings with it the promise of better days ahead. Looking back on 2010, I recall all too well a number of notable events. In January, a devastating earthquake hit Haiti, killing or injuring over 550,000 of its residents. Many countries showed their financial support and human compassion. Also in January, Apple unveiled the iPad and Toyota had a massive recall of its vehicles. In February a blizzard hit the northeast (called snowmageddon) with a vengeance. In February the Saints won the Super Bowl; a real sign of perseverance. Later in the month another earthquake and tsunami wreaked havoc on Chile. In March, President Obama signed into law his now infamous health care bill. In April, BP's oil platform in the Gulf exploded, killing 11. In June, Spain won the World Cup, and the Lakers won the NBA championship. In July President Obama signed financial reform legislation; and later in the month Wikileaks released thousands of sensitive documents for all the world to read. In August, we learned about the ground zero mosque debate. In September, Hurricane Earl looked like it would hit the US Gulf Coast hard; but thankfully it caused very little damage. In October, 33 Chilean coal miners were rescued after 70 days deep below ground. On November 2nd the GOP won control of the House and picked up an additional 6 Senate seats in mid-term elections. Later that month N. Korea shelled a So. Korean island, killing 2 soldiers. In December President Obama reached a tax compromise, and the northeast once again was blasted by snow and ice. Yes, 2010 was filled will all sorts of good, bad and ugly. Through it all the good old USA continued to be a beacon of hope and opportunity. So from our winning team to yours, thanks very much for your trust and friendship. Let's make 2011 the greatest year yet. Warmest regards,
Kyle Lehne,

Bewildering Oil Analysis Results
D. Yunkers
Technical Application Specialist, Analysts, Inc.
A number of return line bearing samples from a steam turbine show elevated particle counts. Wear metals, silica, and water have been eliminated as to the cause or reason. Starting with the most obvious (or easiest) I would direct attention to the sample containers and confirm they are ultra-clean jars with the seal covers still in place. Next would be to confirm the samples are being drawn in a proper manner: if a plug is being removed ensure the area is wiped before removal and sufficient oil is allowed to flow before capturing the sample, etc.
Lines returning to the reservoir will gather contamination to varying degrees and particle counts cannot be reliably 'trended'. However, the question in this case is relative to composition of the particulate, not it's varying presence. I would want to know if the particulate is being generated during each given lube cycle. This could be confirmed by taking a sample at the current sample point and another following the filter. If the filters are adequately reducing the particle levels, we'd know the elevated levels are being generated with each pass through the system.
Using these same samples, I would direct the laboratory to visually identify any non-metallic contaminants present in both samples. There are two options: (1) Ferrography, and (2) Millipore filtration with microscopic examination. Since there were no elevated ferrous wear metals present, Ferrography may be limited in what will be captured on the slide. My choice would be a membrane extraction (0.8µ) for particulate removal and microscopic identification. The examination should focus on identifying the size and composition of contaminants that could include: filter media materials, carbon (seals), hose or gasket materials, varnish formations, lint or cloth fibers (shop towel), etc. There could also be gels formed from an incompatible fluid mixture (such as a glycol based fluid). These gel formations would be detected as solid particles in a laser detector.
Should this not provide the necessary evidence, we'd submit a filter element for removal and a visual examination of what is present within the media. Hopefully, these steps would provide the answers for corrective and preventative actions.

LUBE CORNER
Sun Coast Resources, Inc.
Happy New Year! A number of Sun Coast's customers have inquired about extending the life of their oil. First, you need to set up a sampling program. A lube sample will indicate the condition of the oil, and often the condition of your equipment. Over time, trends can be spotted and you may be able to determine whether the oil life can be extended. |

Lubricant Term:
Analytical Ferrography
The magnetic precipitation and subsequent analysis of wear debris from a fluid sample. This approach involves passing a volume of fluid over a chemically treated microscope slide which is supported over a magnetic field. Permanent magnets are arranged in such a way as to create varying field strength over the length of the substrate. This varying strength causes wear debris to precipitate in a distribution with respect to size and mass over the Ferrogram. Once rinsed and fixed to the substrate, this debris deposit serves as an excellent media for optical analysis of the composite wear particulates. |

Take Control of Your Fuel Price
Over the past several years, fuel prices have fluctuated dramatically, ranging from as low as $1.00 per gallon, to as high as nearly $5.00. Many customers are unaware of the pricing tools available from Sun Coast that can help deal with this extreme volatility. There are many factors which influence petroleum prices, including weather conditions, economic issues, global hostilities, emerging market demand, inventory fluctuations, the value of the U.S. dollar, and enormous speculative trading, which to an ever increasing degree, impacts fuel prices.
Sun Coast can tailor a pricing program to meet individual customer objectives; particularly useful for annual budgeting purposes. This price protection program involves selecting a range of prices (minimum and maximum) which a company is willing to pay over a given period of time. If fuel exceeds the maximum price, the customer pays only the agreed upon maximum price. If the price of fuel falls below the minimum agreed upon price, the customer price remains at the minimum. Customers pay actual market prices when the price of fuel remains between the minimum and maximum range agreed upon. This program helps companies improve their fuel budgeting while at the same time, benefitting from declines in the market.
Fuel price volatility is here to stay. Dealing with it is now possible with Sun Coast's Pricing Protection Program.
