Greetings!
Do you recognize the quote above? If you're a "Shawshank Redemption" fan like I am, you know it's from the scene where Andy is talking to his friend Red in the prison yard. Andy has just had his last hope of proving his innocence dashed by the heartless warden.
You don't have to have impenetrable walls around you to be in prison do you? We can all be prisoners held captive by our thoughts and attitudes.
I'm reminded of something I read years ago about how elephants are trained. When they are very young they are restrained with heavy metal shackles, chains and post. As they get older the restraints are replaced with a small rope. The elephant could easily break free of his or her restraints but has become so accustomed to its prison that it believes it can't break free so it doesn't try. The elephant is imprisoned by it's belief.
I can hear some of you saying, "I'm smarter than an elephant. We humans have a much better developed since of reason." Let me run something by you. Beliefs like habits are not so much a matter of reason as they are of reflex. Like driving a car or brushing your teeth.
We have to consciously choose to question a belief or the way we do certain things. When I first heard Andy's admonishment years ago I was reminded of what Moses said to the Israelites when they were embarking on the promise land after wandering in the desert for 40 years.
"This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live"
Deuteronomy 30:19
What does choosing life look like to you? Don't forget, get busy living or get busy dying. It's our choice.
