What has the CKCA and Crown King been up to? |
 - The Crown King Community Survey is still open! Many of you have opened but not completed your surveys. Remember that everybody in your household who is a CKCA member can complete the survey. Please contact Meara if you did not receive one or if it ended up in your Spam/Junk mailbox. The purpose of the survey is to gather data from all property owners and all permanent residents of the Crown King Community. We need the data so we can have a record of what issues or concerns exist in our community. After the survey we will categorize the responses and rate the issues on importance. The data at this point can then be used to meet with County, State or Forest Service departments.
- IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT ALL
PROPERTY OWNERS AND RESIDENTS PARTICIPATE IN THIS SURVEY! Only 29 of you have opened and filled
out your survey. If you filled out your Census, you should also fill out
your Crown King Community Survey. We need ALL residents & property
owners to participate in this survey so we know where you stand on
issues affecting your community right now! Please help encourage
participation, without our community - the community association cannot
move forward.
- Would you like to feature your business on our newsletters? Please see the FAQ page for details or contact Meara

Crown King Person of the Month
|
On behalf of the
Crown King Community Association, this month's "Person of the Month" is
Meara
Perrin whose contributions to our community are beginning to be too
numerous to
mention.
Meara spends her days looking after her great family, helping
Dave run
the business, and keeping everyone in the community up to date with
news,
events, and exactly what's happening in our little town.
Many of you may
recall
that it was Meara who coordinated and continually updated the Lane 2
Fire
informational website a few years ago, keeping the residents updated on
the
fire's progress. She did this at her own expense as well as devoting
countless
hours to this daunting task.
Meara currently serves the community and
people of
Crown King in several different capacities. Not only does she act as the
CKCA's Public Information Liaison carrying all the responsibilities
that come with that job, but
she is also instrumental in publishing our monthly newsletter and
surveys, keeping
the CKCA website up to date, as
well as providing us with excellent ideas for the betterment of the
association and the Town.
Recently, she was responsible for one of the most
exciting events
in Crown King so far this year - the Crown King Prom - which had an excellent
level of
participation and was an absolute fun evening for all.
Thanks for all
that you
do, Meara!

Update On The Rash Of Property Break-ins And Thefts In And Around Crown King |
Community Association Board Meets
On June
12th, 2010, the Community Association board and officers had a
working session to address the problem of recent cabin break-ins in Crown
King. The discussion concerned the most
effective method of informing property owners of precautions to take, and to
quell rumors. It was decided that a
meeting of town's people with the Sheriff as soon as possible would be the most
desirable avenue.
This meeting is now scheduled for Saturday, July 17th, 2010. Dwight D'Evelyn and Lt.
Mark Schmidt of the
Yavapai Co. Sheriff's department will be here for a community meeting at
the fire department at 10:30.
If you did not read the update we sent out to the CKCA membership on 6/16 on the rash of property break-ins and thefts in and around Crown King you can read it here. |
Update on Fire Restrictions
|
PRESCOTT, AZ (June 25, 2010) - Campfire
and smoking restrictions went into effect on the Prescott National
Forest Wednesday, June 23, at 8:00 a.m. Forest managers have determined
that key trigger points have been reached to warrant taking these
restrictive actions. These include increased forest visitor use,
abandoned campfires and rising temperatures.
The following fire
restrictions will be in effect for the entire Prescott National Forest: Campfires, charcoal grills, and
stove fires (wood, charcoal, and coal burning) are prohibited on all
Prescott National Forest lands, roads, and trails; except within
developed recreation sites where grills and campfire rings are
provided.
Pressurized liquid or gas
stoves, lanterns and heaters meeting safety specifications are allowed.
Smoking, except within an
enclosed vehicle or building, a developed recreation site, or while
stopped in an area at least three (3) feet in diameter that is barren or
cleared of all flammable material.
Campfires are not allowed
at the designated dispersed sites within the Prescott Basin. Metal
posts identify designated dispersed sites with a number.
Campfire and smoking restrictions will
remain in effect until forest officials determine that conditions have
changed sufficiently to reduce the risk of human-caused wildfire. Violation of these prohibitions is punishable by a fine of not more
than $5,000 for an individual or $10,000 for an organization, or
imprisonment of not more than six (6) months, or both. The public is
reminded that fireworks are always prohibited on all national forest
lands.
For current information on fire
restrictions,
closures or wildfires on the Prescott National Forest, call
928-777-5799. For further information about fire restrictions on public
lands in Arizona and New Mexico, call toll free 1-877-864-6985 or visit

Fool's Gold in the Bradshaws
(From "From the
Ground Up" - mining stories by Governor Jack Williams)
Fort
Whipple's commanding officer didn't take kindly to the idea of his men spending
their spare time on mining claims. If they
had signed up for a tour of duty in the U.S. Army, they should be drilling,
marching, working around the barracks...not rushing off to dig for gold.
But the
law said any claim on the public domain had to be worked to be held. So when a soldier had a claim, he would hire
a local prospector to do "assessment" work, thereby satisfying the law.
One such
prospector saw no reason to exert any effort and decided to pass it on to
somebody else for a smaller fee, and pocket the difference.
He
wandered over to the Tiger mining camp and found two bullwhackers. "Say," he proposed, "you fellas be interested
in working on a claim?" "Yeh,
sure," the men agreed. "Just give us the
tools."
Armed
with drills and shovels, they started digging. The dirt flew steadily until they reached solid rock. The men found a softer spot and started
digging again. This time they uncovered
a vein about four inches wide, full of sparkling ore that they identified as
iron pyrite, or "fool's gold".
Figuring
they had done their job by uncovering anything at all, they returned to the
mining camp. The prospectors around the
campfire greeted them jovially. "Hey,
you find anything up there?"
"Nah...just
a bunch of them iron pirates. See?" A
nugget was thrown across the campfire, glinting in its lighted arc. The miner who caught it stared
incredulously. "You found this?"
"Yeh...we
knew it was a waste of time diggin' up there."
"Man,
this is gold - all gold!"
The
Crown King area yielded gold strike after gold strike, and Bradshaw City,
nearby, grew to a rollicking camp of almost 5,000 people.
Over
$1.5 million in gold was produced before 1901, and some silver, copper, lead
and zinc were mined as well. The
developers built a railroad that connected the Crown King with Prescott. Ore was transported along a winding track
until 1927, when the railroad was replaced by a highway.
In 1948
production at the Crown King was stopped. But during its rich years, the mine yielded some $2 million of ore -
gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc and, if the two bullwhackers are to be
believed, maybe even a few worthless nuggets of "iron pirate".
