Herbs as Food,

Meals as Medicine Workshop

Nathan at Herb Workshop Healthier eating is a goal everyone can agree on these days and if you'd like to learn more about including medicinal herbs into your diet you won't want to miss our next culinary get-together "Herbs as Food, Meals as Medicine", Saturday, November 12 from 10: 00 a.m. to noon.

Nathan Kaehler, an herbalist, acupuncturist and the owner of the Ojai Herb & Acupuncture Clinic, will share ideas and recipes for including medicinal herbs in food and utilizing everyday foods as medicine. Nathan came to Ojai in 2001 and shares on his website www.ojaiherbs.com, "People here have a special appreciation for the healing power of plants and trees and the need to honor both tradition and science in medicine."

Nathan will have tasting samples and provide handouts. The event is $20 for OVGC supporting members and $25 for non-members. Space is limited to 20 and attendees need to register by email at ojaiculinaryclub@gmail.com. Full details will be sent with your confirmation. Creek Habitat Restoration Work

If you are a new OVGC member, you might be interested to learn that we have been leading an ongoing creek riparian habitat restoration project since November 2009, that began in Ojai Creek inside Libbey Park near Ojai Avenue.
Creek Restoration Photo
Before and after: photo on left shows a reach of Ojai Creek in 2009, overrun with invasive vinca, palm trees, and Himalayan blackberry; photo on right shows the same area in September 2010, after restoration.

Two volunteer work days are coming up November 19 and December 3, with more in February-March 2012. On the 19th, we will finish up mulching and do planting in Ojai Creek. In December we will move over to the Fox Canyon Barranca to clean out brush, debris and trash. If you are as excited about this project as we are, we invite you to participate. The work days are from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., rain or shine. We meet above the Libbey Park lower tennis courts, up the stairs off the Libbey Park Montgomery St. parking lot before proceeding to the location of the day.

To participate just show up, but please wear appropriate closed-toe shoes, long pants, and long-sleeved shirt. If you have gloves, please bring those. If you can't find us, call Deborah at (805) 331-4348.

If you would like more information about the project, please call (805) 669-8445 or email Deborah at coordinator@ojaivalleygreencoalition.com.
