Ojai Day, October 15th
OVGC to Offer Free Bike Valet Service
The Ojai Valley Green Coalition will once again offer a free bike valet service on Ojai Day, Saturday, October 15 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The OVGC will supply the bike check service on the "Go Green Block" at the corner of Ojai Ave. and Ventura St. in the hopes the service will encourage attendees to pedal to the event rather than drive. Operating like a coat check for bicycles, the valet service will issue riders a claim ticket for their bike. The bikes will then be placed in a secure "bike corral" where they and any rider's accessories, such as helmets, will be safe. The "Go Green Block" between Blanche and Ventura St. will also feature alternative transportation displays, information on food production, a green built home on wheels, and watershed education. For more Ojai Day details visit www.ojaiday.com.

Speaker Offers Ways to Increase Your Water Capacity, Decrease Your Water Bill
If you are one of the many that cringe at their monthly water bill and/ or want to create a more sustainable lifestyle, you won't want to miss the Nate Downey presentation on harvesting rainwater - Wednesday, October 19, hosted by the Coalition. The talk and book signing will be from 7 to 9:00 p.m. at the Chaparral Auditorium, 414 E. Ojai Avenue. | | Nate Downey |
Nate is part down-to-earth landscaper, hands-on scientist, and, dare we say, entertainer. Luckily for us, he said yes to a stop in Ojai on his way to larger speaking engagements in Santa Barbara and Los Angeles. Nate's aim with his latest book, "Harvest the Rain- How to Enrich Your Life by Seeing Every Storm as a Resource," is to make doing the smart thing ecologically easy and a no-brainer for each and everyone out there. The book is filled with doable projects and ideas that can fit into anyone's busy schedule, yes even in these days of trying to scrape together a living and, pardon the pun, stay afloat. Nate shares information on everything from water-catchment techniques (created by digging, preparing soils and mulches, composting, cutting swales, and sowing and planting) to methods for converting an existing septic system into a "sludge-hammer", a closed system method of converting sewage into useful greywater and eliminating expensive pumping. Besides being thoroughly practical and enjoyable, his ideas are ranked according to time requirements, expense, and difficulty, and come with the highest of praise from major players in the sustainable and environmental movements. to read more click here.

Teen Hopes to Keep Ojai Seeing the Stars -
Gives Legs to Proposed Ojai Light Ordinance
Have you every looked up into Ojai's night sky and been thankful you lived here? Then you may want to attend the October 22 presentation, "Dark Skies & Starry Nights" at Meditation Mount and find out how you can help keep it that way. The educational event was the brain child of Ojai Valley eighth grader Erin Rush, who got together with Ojai Valley Green Coalition member Gail Topping and Nancy Emerson, local representative of the International Dark Sky Association to create the program. Erin, who moved here from Park City, Utah a year ago fell in love with the Ojai night. "When I arrived in Ojai, the first thing I noticed was how dark it is at night," says Erin. "I saw the beautiful twinkle of stars filling the summer night sky, right over my house. I thought about how lucky Ojai is to have such a beautiful night sky. Then it hit me: the night sky isn't any more beautiful in Ojai than in Park City, it's just easier to see!" According to Erin, that's when she got the idea to get behind the light ordinance proposed by the OVGC, and promote it at a stargazing party, showing the film "The City Dark" about losing the visibility to see stars. The film will explain some of the facts and reasoning behind the proposed ordinance. According to Gail, the ordinance is crafted to protect and promote the public health, safety and welfare, including the quality of life and the ability to view the night sky, by establishing regulations and a process of review for exterior lighting. You can view the complete ordinance document here. Erin and Gail would like the City Council to act on the ordinance and direct City staff to have a draft before the City Planning Commission as soon as possible. According to Gail, some of these concepts have already been included in revisions to the County's Ojai Valley Area Plan. The Green Coalition's Built Environment Council is willing to assist City staff in this effort by doing research, planning, and public outreach Ms. Rush is no dilettante and organized the entire event; she is a teen trying to make a difference. Despite her very full life as a student, who enjoys outdoor sports like rock climbing and mountain biking, as well as team sports like soccer and volleyball, she still has time for her "newest favorite thing, looking up at the night sky." "When I moved to Ojai I went on the OVGC website," says Erin, who attended her mother's stargazing parties in Park City. "I saw the event proposals on there and I thought wouldn't it be great to bring the star parties here. I saw the light ordinance project that Gail had been working on for several years and asked if she would help with this project too." Please join Erin and the Ojai Valley Green Coalition for the event offering the latest information about nighttime illumination and how it affects living creatures, our environment, our own bodies, and our ability to see those lovely stars. The evening includes the documentary about light pollution, a discussion with Q&A, and hands on stargazing with The Santa Barbara Astronomical Unit. The entire program is free and takes place at Meditation Mount, 10340 Reeves Rd., running from 5:45-9 p.m., Saturday, October 22. For more information on the event and Erin Rush, click here.

Ojai Valley-Wide Discussion Update Five years ago County Supervisor Steve Bennett and staff held a series of Ojai Valley-Wide Discussion (OVWD) meetings at Nordhoff High School. Working together, attendees agreed on two priority areas of focus that would have a positive impact on the Ojai Valley. Those two areas were "making the Ojai Valley a model green and sustainable community" and "disaster preparation, including CERT training". Supervisor Bennett is inviting all OVGC members to a get together to review what we hoped to accomplish, share the progress we've made, and, if the group agrees, set new objectives for the coming years. He has reserved the meeting room and BBQ area at Camp Comfort for Sunday, October 23rd for a 2 to 5:30 p.m. gathering where we can meet together and then enjoy a light casual meal. Please mark your calendar and then RSVP. Details and other information will be sent to you upon your reservation. Click here for Supervisor Bennett's invitation. |

Successful 2011 Green Home & Building Tour Last Saturday, over 100 people toured our 'green built' homes and commercial site. The feedback as to the diversity of sites and things to see was great. All the site owners seemed to have a great time, too. Our favorite story was a man on the tour from Los Angeles with two other family members. He had heard about the tour from his sister, who lives in Maryland! She discovered us on the internet while doing research on yurts and told her brother about the tour. We wish to express extra appreciation to Besant Hill School for hosting our tour reception and all the work done to create an experience for tour goers as our commercial tour site. It took a village from our member volunteers, the generosity of site owners and sponsors, and all the folks who came to make 2011 the success it was. Thank You All! |
