August 2012

stop and smell the flowers
Stop and smell the flowers
Happy Summer to you!

Why is it that sometimes a simple activity of taking a walk can feel so
incredibly mundane, and other times so alive and refreshing? What is it that I have changed within me that allows for a different experience? Contemplating this on my walk yesterday, I could come to one conclusion:  Appreciation.

When I open up all my senses and observe what's around me, I am drawn in by curiosity, and that intrigue leads to appreciation for what I am experiencing. I begin to see, feel, hear, and even taste its beauty, its majesty, its Grace.

Give it a try. It's these apparently simple things become more prominent and speak so loudly when we give our mindful attention to them.

It actually works for relationships, too. When I take time be curious
about someone else's life and experience, I have a deeper sense of connection, love, and appreciation for who they are in this world. This leads to more profound and meaningful relationships. It could be a question you've been hesitating to ask or an idea that usually goes unexpressed. But time and again, it always works.

So, next time you feel distant from a partner or loved one, find something that interests you about him or her, something you're curious about or intrigued by, and ask them about it. Just maybe you'll catch them by pleasant surprise, and their hearts will feel that love, interest and appreciation coming their way!

Anisha also can refer you to an acupuncturist colleague who can continue your sessions while she is away.
When Fire goes bad

As we introduced in the July issue, the Fire element, which regulates temperature, is associated with summer, a season of heat, and also a time of joy and filled with the energy of excitement and playfulness.

fire flame The Fire element also gives us the ability to feel and express joyfulness, and to give and receive love. However, just like a fire, our levels of joy and happiness can flare up or equally, all too quickly, burn out without sufficient fuel to sustain it.

Obviously, the inability to feel Joy is
a serious concern, yet Joy should not be forced. Joy and happiness need to be kept in perspective and should flow naturally from our experiences and relationships. The search for too much Joy can lead to an excessively hedonistic lifestyle, always searching for the next hit of excitement from unsustainable sources such as drugs, alcohol, or casual sexual encounters.

Too much or too little fire

People with a constitutional imbalance in fire or "Fire types" often have issues around closeness and intimacy. They can become too close too quickly, and then are deeply hurt by relationships that may not have been the best fit for them in the first place. They also can  resort to inappropriately playing the fool and clowning, or worry too much about what other people think of them. These behaviors can  result in anxiety or panic attacks. Just as a lack of joy can lead to a state of near miserableness, someone who expresses excessive Joy can suffer, as well, and even be difficult to be around.

If any of this sounds familiar to you, you might benefit from a summer acupuncture tune-up to keep your Fire element in check. Classical Acupuncture works to re-establish communication with all of the elements within you, creating balance and harmony with all five elements.
The invariable mark of wisdom is to see the miraculous in the common.
