Talking Paws Newsletter
Greetings!

I hope you enjoy reading this issue, have a look at Jan's weekly topics, they're full of interesting information.

As for me, I'm making steady progress with Toby, he's settling in just fine, with just a few blips.

I would like to share a very humble moment that occurred last weekend, I was walking with my three dogs Hansi, Dritta and Toby and what was a lovely sunny day turned into a heavy rain shower with thunder, it happened so quickly I didn't have a chance to react.  The rain was pouring so much they were unable to keep their eyes open.  What astonished me was my three dogs knew exactly what to do....as I was taking shelter under a tree, they found a small little area in some bushes just big enough for the three of them and laid down huddled together.  A couple of times Dritta came out to check I was still nearby, then went back to her hiding spot.  I then moved and stood outside this little cave they'd found and felt like a complete outsider, but very privileged to be a part of something so simple yet so primal and inspiring.

Rainfall Moment

Hope you're having a great weekend.

All the best

Toby's Diary

Hi my name is Toby and I'm going to share my time with you.  I've been here for one month now and boy am I keeping my person on her toes!!

It is taking me a long time to realise that I mustn't pee in the house, I don't do it very often but sometimes I forget myself.  My person is very understanding, she doesn't tell me off, just puts me outside without speaking to me. I'm starting to get it, because when I do go to the toilet outside, she's really happy with me.

I've got to grips with nighttime now, I understand a little better that my person vanishes upstairs at night but always returns down when the sun comes up, that's the best part.  I try to get her to come down straightaway as soon as I hear her but she never does.

I'm getting more confident around my person now, I've even started to jump up a little which gets me nowhere.

I've chewed a few things as well, but this again doesn't get me anywhere, I just can't seem to get her attention on my terms which makes me know I have a really good leader.

I went out on my first walk three weeks ago, my person kept me on a really long lead and I had a blast, I can't remember ever being able to run like that and now my person really trusts me so I graduated to being completely off lead, every time my person calls me back, guess what? I get something tasty to eat.  I have been taught to walk on her right side but sometimes I like to walk next to my girlfriend Dritta who is always on her left. My person changes direction all the time when we go for a walk, it seems that she only does this if I go ahead of her, this immediately lets me know that I can trust her as the decision maker.

I like to get as muddy as possible on walks, the other day, I was on a lovely walk and found a fresh pile of cow muck which I thought would really suit my white coat, so I covered myself in it....I will warn you all though, the down side to this is getting  washed down by a hose.....I prefer the bath as then it's warm water which I experienced the other day, so I made sure I had a good dunk in a nice smelly pond to get rid of all that unusual smell from my wash.

See you next time

Love Toby x

Walk Details

A walk around the Languard Fort Area, (dogs to be on a lead as we walk through the nature reserve), finishing off with a run and a play along the beach as we make our way back to the car park.

Donations can be made on the day, all proceeds going to the Animal Health Trust.

Kesgrave Walk May

Our last group walk was held at Kesgrave, 12th May.  Dogs brought their owners along to meet up at Long Strops Entrance, Kesgrave where the eager dogs where keen to be let off the lead and allowed to run freely together with their new found friends.

Everyone enjoyed a much deserving walk in the sunshine with some good company along the way, making a refreshing change to walking alone in the rain!

Generous voluntary donations were made, totalling to £72.50 with all proceeds going to the Animal Health Trust to help them with their investigations into Seasonal Canine Illness (SCI).

The Animal Health Trust do not know exactly what the causes SCI, but it's generally seen between August and November and it can affect any size, shape or sex of dog and that it causes dogs to become very ill, very quickly. The most common clinical signs are sickness, diarrhoea and lethargy.  If you suspect your dog is showing signs of SCI then please contact your vet immediately.
