An Update on the Forsyth Big Creek Greenway In our March Newsletter, we covered the Alpharetta and Roswell portions of the Big Creek Greenway. We briefly mentioned the Forsyth portion of the Greenway that will eventually connect with the Alpharetta and Roswell sections. This month, we bring you an update on the progress of the Forsyth section for our customers who live in Suwanee and Cumming. What is the Forsyth Big Creek Greenway? The Greenway in Forsyth is similar to its counterparts in Alpharetta and Roswell - a 12-foot wide path, concrete in some areas and boardwalk in others, which works its way along Big Creek in Forsyth County. Eventually, the Forsyth, Alpharetta and Roswell Greenways will all connect. How long is the Forsyth Big Creek Greenway? When completed, the Forsyth portion alone will be approximately 15 miles long. Construction of the trail was broken down into 5 phases. The first 3 phases are complete, running approximately 7 miles in length.
Phases 4 and 5 will cover the last 8 miles of the path and will be started next year. We will let you know when those have been completed, allowing you to enjoy 15 extra miles of safe riding.
How close is my community to the Forsyth Big Creek Greenway? Phase 1 of the Greenway starts at McFarland Road just north of Shiloh Road. It's path takes you along Big Creek just on the east side of Shepherd's Pond and only 1/4 of a mile south of the entrance to the new community of Wallace Run, then just past Shiloh Battle and Shiloh Creek. The end of Phase 1 and second access point is at Fowler Park on Hwy 9, right next to the community of Longwood. Phase 2 is shorter and follows Big Creek from Fowler Park, just south of Oakmont and Dressage. Phase 2 ends with an access point on Majors Road just south of the Polo Fields Golf and Country Club. Phase 3 goes around the Polo Fields and the golf course. It ends at an access point just south of the entrance to the Coventry community and just north of Big Creek Township and Forest Brooke on Bethelview Road. This is the future location of Bethelview Park which is still being planned but will probably have easy access from those communities. Coventry has asked for a spur from the trail, giving those homeowners direct access from their community. You can access a map of phases 4 and 5 here.
Where can I access the Forsyth Big Creek Greenway? A trailhead access point at Bethelview Road offers limited parking, and serves as an excellent place to begin your adventure. This area is open from dawn to dusk. Nearby residents are encouraged to walk or bike to this location.
A temporary trailhead will be provided for Phase 1 on the south side of McFarland Boulevard between Ronald Reagan Boulevard and Big Creek. The trail crossing on SR 9 at Castleberry Road will not be open until the traffic signal is operational later this year. |
