FortisBC Automated Letter of Support

Proposed Sale of Nexen to CNOOC
China National Offshore Oil Corporation has made a bid of $15.1 billion for Nexen Inc. The deal must be approved by both Canadian and US federal governments before being finalized. Click above for the Financial Post's article on the issue.

The infrastructure needs of Fort Nelson and the Northern Rockies Regional Municipality will be getting a much needed look over, after the recent signing of a memorandum of understanding. The MOU was signed on July 12 and officially announced this morning by Peace River North MLA Pat Pimm on behalf of Ida Chong, Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development.

Finavera Wind Energy has agreed to sell its proposed 38 wind turbine project near Chetwynd to Innergex Renewable Energy for approximately $22 million. The 77 megawatt Wildmare Wind Energy Project has already been awarded a 25 year agreement to provide power to B.C. Hydro, and is at an advanced stage of permitting. Click above for more information.

Federal Government Invests in Restoring Peace Region Oil and Gas Land
Along with the growing oil and gas activity in our area, comes increasing soil erosion and weed invasion. The federal government is looking to counteract that, with today's announcement by Prince George Peace River MP Bob Zimmer of an investment of $177,500 in the Peace River Forage Association of British Columbia.


While the City of Fort St. John has yet to take a stance on the proposed Site C dam, it wants to make sure the city is prepared should the project go ahead. Mayor Lori Ackerman announced today that the City is taking on its own public consultation on the matter, to identify concerns and potential benefits there may be to the community.

The Immigrant Employment Council of British Columbia (IEC-BC) is hosting an Employer Summit on September 18th at the Wosk Centre for Dialogue in Vancouver.  The Summit will showcase leading practices on attracting, hiring and retaining immigrant talent to help employers meet the labour shortages. In celebration of the 70th Anniversary of the building of the Alaska Highway, the Military Vehicle Preservation Association (MVPA) is traveling the Alaska Highway in 80 historic military vehicles! 
The convoy will launch from Dawson Creek on August 4th, 2012 and travel approximately 6,600 km in 27 days.  
The convoy will be seen traveling through Fort Nelson on August 5th and again on August 28th, when the convoy participants will stay overnight to join Fort Nelson community members in a convoy parade, free barbeque, live entertainment, and display of the military vehicles at the Rec Centre.

Take part - share your time - show your appreciation of our community's history!
Volunteers are needed for a variety of activities: community BBQ, security, marshalling of the convoy participants and ensuring everyone has fun!

Visitor Centre News 

 

The Visitor Centre is again open seven days a week, from 8am-8pm. Stop by and one of our Tourism/Visitor Information Counselors will help you find information for your summer vacation or "stay-cation" with local events and activities.

 

We have an expanded selection of artwork, jewelry, pottery, books, CDs and DVDs, and souvenirs available for purchase; free internet access, and information on all regions of the province.

 


Community Events

 

The Vancouver Aquarium will be in Fort Nelson this month! Check out the BC Hydro AquaVan on July 29 at Fort Nelson First Nation and July 30 at Art Fraser Memorial Park.  

 

The MVPA Alaska Highway Convoy will pass through Fort Nelson heading north on April 5. Be sure to watch for the 80+ historic military vehicles!

 

The NRRM's annual Teddy Bear Picnic will be filled with songs, a Teddy Bear Treasure Hunt, a Teddy Bear Parade and refreshments! Bring your favorite Teddy and a picnic blanket to the Rec Centre Community Hall on Saturday, August 11th from 11am-1pm.


Join Encana and the NRRM in the second annual Half Marathon & Fun Run on September 22! Enjoy a run/walk on the community trail with the whole family - including the dog! There will be events for all ages, free concession items and great give-aways.
