FortisBC Update
Important Information for Fort Nelson residents & businesses! Do you approve of a 54% increase in your FortisBC Gas Bill? FortisBC has applied to the BC Utilities Commission to amalgamate service areas and implement common or "postage stamp" rates. This would mean an increase of approximately 54% to Fort Nelson FortisBC customers while Vancouver Island will see a decrease of 35 to 40% and Whistler will decrease by about 37%. This does not include any future increases due to commodity pricing. FortisBC believes it is fair to have Fort Nelson consumers subsidize the cost of service delivery to these other areas and if approved this would also mean any future capital costs, (projects or maintenance) anywhere in the province would be shared by Fort Nelson. FortisBC plans to implement the rate increases over a period of 18 years however a 54% increase is unfair regardless of the time frame and we should not be expected to subsidize the remainder of the province. This is one of the few instances where we don't and shouldn't have to pay extra for the cost of delivery - the gas is here! We need to speak out strongly against this proposal and ensure our voice is heard at the BC Utilities Commission. The Fort Nelson & District Chamber of Commerce is a registered intervener in this application and we must have our submissions in place by the end of July. A petition is available for signing at the Chamber office located beside the Visitor Information Centre and attached below are links to several sample letters. If you would like an editable format please contact us. Residents can register as an interested party with the BCUC at www.bcuc.com (choose "FEU Common Rates, Amalgamation and Rate Design") or provide your letter to the Chamber of Commerce to be included with our submissions. FortisBC has garnered letters of support from the communities on Vancouver Island and we need to have an equally strong voice. Fort Nelson opposed a similar application successfully in 1993 so please add your voice to ours. If you need more information please contact Bev Vandersteen at the Chamber office 250-774-2956.
