December 2010

The Millie Award Recipient for December is Kevin Cederberg. Kevin is a CNA and Medication Aide at Golden LivingCenter - Prairie Hills in Rapid City. Kevin has been with Prairie Hills for over 14 years. He takes the extra time to pamper each resident. So it is not surprising that the residents love Kevin. When he is on vacation, the residents always ask, "Where is Kevin? When will he be back?"

Kevin keeps his residents first and foremost in his thoughts and deeds even after his shift ends. He often finds special items for his residents while shopping. Kevin also takes the time to accompany them to funerals for family members and friends. His actions are a testament to his ongoing commitment to his residents. Thank you and congratulations Kevin!

"This is awesome!"

-My son exclaimed when visiting Terrace Manor, Dell Rapids-

In the interest of full disclosure, I need to mention that my son shouted these words on Halloween, while trick-or-treating at Terrace Manor. After hiking from house to house, making the rounds at the Manor was a breeze. Since the residents were gathered in a semi-circle in the activities room, he was able to quickly make the rounds by simply greeting a resident, taking two steps, and greeting the next. In a matter of minutes, he amassed the equivalent amount of goodies as he would have acquired had he visited 15 houses! Although, his exclamation was certainly inspired by copious amounts of candy, he also enjoyed chatting with the residents and staff too.

As caregivers, you know that the care you provide is "awesome".  Now we need to once again share this truth with a record number of new and veteran legislators.  The Joint Appropriations Committee recently held an interim hearing on the financial condition of our state. Although the largest source of state revenue, the sales tax has increased recently, bank franchise taxes, also a substantial revenue source, have fallen significantly.

The news was especially disheartening for Medicaid providers. The state will experience a significantly reduced federal Medicaid matching rate that will require the state to shoulder over 40% of Medicaid expenditures in the next fiscal year; currently the state has to come up with a little over 30%. The bottom line- the Legislative Research Council estimates a loss of nearly $40 million in federal dollars.

With such great economic pressures, we will have to push our lawmakers like never before. They need to truly understand that even with limited resources, the quality care you deliver to your residents, really is "awesome"!

Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Sincerely,

  marks sig

Working out regularly doesn't only help tone your body and build muscle - it could also help you avoid catching the common cold, a new study suggests.

People who exercise five or more times a week get fewer and less severe colds than those who work out one or fewer times a week, said Dr. David Nieman, director of the Human Performance Laboratory at Appalachian State University in North Carolina.  READ MORE...

A Rainbow Of Healthy Options

Ksfy.com

We eat with our eyes, and that's why colorful foods always appeal to our senses. In fact, they actually may add years to our life.

There are no guarantees, of course, but the natural pigments that make our fruits and veggies so bright make them powerhouses when it comes to protecting our bodies from diseases as we age. Research proves that the so-called "good stuff" in our produce rainbow is a compound called a phytonutrient. Basically, that's just an organic part of a plant that's thought to promote good health.

What does this mean for us?

The red in tomatoes and in cranberries just might be heart-healthy for us and reduce the risk of some cancers, just as antioxidant-rich vegetables like Salad Savoy and dark leafy greens are also said to do.

Heart-healthy purple fruit like Concord grapes and the blue in blueberries do that, too, while also boosting our brain power.

The yellow in corn has been linked to fighting one of the causes of blindness in the elderly.

We all know that the beta carotene in orange foods like carrots and sweet potatoes are good for our eyes, but did you know that they also may reduce cholesterol, making them heart-healthy?
