November 2010

The Millie Award Recipient for November is Karen Sween. Karen is a CNA at the White Healthcare Center (WHCC). Karen began serving at the WHCC 21 years ago where she has dedicated herself to the overnight shift. She understands the importance of making the residents feel safe and secure all night long. Karen's tenure has benefited the entire Center, resulting in an increased overall nurturing atmosphere.

Karen has embraced significant changes at WHCC through the years. From a change in ownership, a restructuring, the addition of a clinic and the opening of a memory support unit. For Karen, the constant has always been the undivided attention she gives her residents.

"Should things go wrong...the people will set them right by the peaceable exercise of their elective rights."

-Thomas Jefferson-

Tomorrow is Election Day and also the last day to vote, since absentee ballots have been available since September 21st. My message is a simple one: if you have not voted yet, please do so now.

SDHCA understands that we need to support legislators that understand and support those who care for our residents.  Thanks to your generosity, the SDHCA PAC has raised over $22,000 for races across our state; an unprecedented amount in the 59 year history of our Association. SDHCA held first class legislative receptions in Pierre, educational forums for new and veteran lawmakers, and hosted a gubernatorial debate during our Convention.

SDHCA recently published a Long Term Care Voter's Guide to be used as a practical tool when making your voting decisions. The Guide highlights each legislator's voting record on key long term care legislation at both the committee and chamber level. The average legislator voted with us 83% of the time. A few voted with us less than that. Many voted with us 100% of the time. Bottom line: to the extent that long term care issues are important to you professionally and personally, please consider utilizing the Guide when making your voting decision.

As always, thank you for what you do everyday for South Dakota's elderly and disabled citizens.

Sincerely,

 marks sig

Executive Director

The issue of health care has dominated the national political debate but it's also an important issue at the state level. South Dakota's next governor will have to deal with the state's budget problems while still providing quality care for South Dakotans. This Dakota Digest takes a look at the challenges facing health care workers who provide long term care for the elderly and disabled.

John Roether is a Certified Nursing Assistant at the Golden LivingCenter in Pierre. Roether has been a CNA for over 35 years. He says it's a job you have to love in order to do it.

Providers Revamp Dining to Please the Palette: Choices & Flexibility Lead to Better Outcomes

When Cindy Dahl began her career as a nutritionist, it probably never occurred to her that she would one day be a judge in a culinary competition - a la "Top Chef" -tasting five-star-worthy dishes like Chilean sea bass with nested linguine and salmon in red chili sauce with garlic-piped potatoes. But for the past two years, Dahl, who heads up quality nutritional services for Plum Healthcare in San Diego, has done just that as part of the company's Top Plum Chef competition, inspired by the popular television show.

A Rainbow Of Healthy Options

KSFY.com

We eat with our eyes, and that's why colorful foods always appeal to our senses. In fact, they actually may add years to our life.

There are no guarantees, of course, but the natural pigments that make our fruits and veggies so bright make them powerhouses when it comes to protecting our bodies from diseases as we age. Research proves that the so-called "good stuff" in our produce rainbow is a compound called a phytonutrient. Basically, that's just an organic part of a plant that's thought to promote good health.

What does this mean for us?

The red in tomatoes and in cranberries just might be heart-healthy for us and reduce the risk of some cancers, just as antioxidant-rich vegetables like Salad Savoy and dark leafy greens are also said to do.

Heart-healthy purple fruit like Concord grapes and the blue in blueberries do that, too, while also boosting our brain power.

The yellow in corn has been linked to fighting one of the causes of blindness in the elderly.

We all know that the beta carotene in orange foods like carrots and sweet potatoes are good for our eyes, but did you know that they also may reduce cholesterol, making them heart-healthy?

Promise You'll Never Put Me In A Home

Forbes

Mom probably made you say it.  Maybe Dad did too.  Could there be anything that causes more guilt in adult children with aging parents? It's an almost universal plea parents make to us.  And we universally agree to what they ask, not thinking too far ahead.

When our aging parents extract this promise from us, they're usually in pretty good shape and make it clear that they want to remain in their homes until they die.

Most people want that, and we'll probably want that too as we age ourselves.
