Glass Countertops are becoming quite the design trend both in residential and commercial spaces.
According to Greg Gomolka of Gomolka Design Studios, the thicker the glass countertop, the higher in demand.
Today Gomolka expounds on the latest glass counter trends, his start in the glass business, and several of his projects using Glasswerks glass and services.
Q. Do you see Glass Countertops as a rising trend in residential spaces?
We've been manufacturing Thick glass countertops for a number of years now, and it's quickly becoming the new trend. For quite a while it was the glass flooring and stair treads that were the trend and kept us busy but lately we are seeing a huge demand for the Thick glass and our Colorfuse™ Thick glass countertops
We've had a great relationship with
Glasswerks from the very beginning.
Nowhere else can I find the same service and willingness to please customers that I do from Glasswerks.
I've always received great customer service from them, and that by itself is saying a lot these days.

Q. What is the most requested glass countertop and for what application? At first it was residential kitchen island tops, mostly in clear or low-iron glass. Then we got the restaurants, nightclubs and hotels requesting thick glass tops with colors so we used our Colorfuse™ glass. Colorfuse™ was invented and pioneered by Gomolka Design Studio and is a form of fusing and casting with colors which creates bubbles and iridescent effects inside of the glass. In a lot of cases we LED light these from the edge or bottom, and we eve supply the customer with the LED lighting.  | |

Q. How did you get started in the glass design business?
I was brought up in the glass world. My father, founder of GDS, was a true artist and did various mediums of art. One of them of course was cast and slump glass. When he decided to move his family from the Netherlands to California in 1983 he brought this technique with him, and it was quite unknown in America. With his great designs and the beauty of the glass he became well known for his cast glass and it became his specialty. Now it's the only medium we work with and we are pioneering new products for the architectural specialty glass world all the time.

I had worked with my father since I was a young teenager and have been in the glass world since 1983 when we made the move here. I called it "slave labor" back then since I didn't get paid and was forced to help him! [Laughs] But obviously I learned a lot. Q. How long have you been a Glasswerks customer?
We started using Glasswerks...well, before they were Glasswerks and were called Fabricated Glass in Escondido. Come to think of it, we have been with Glasswerks L.A. ever since they were still on Adams. At one point we rented a small space from Glasswerks San Diego and had our kiln on the property. Made it very convenient when we needed some glass.
