Optimizing Your E-newsletter
Sooner is better!
This month's issue is packed with e-news related suggestions, some tips for using the new Constant Contact graphic editor and a client case study with practical advice on how to make the most of YOUR e-newsletter. I want to thank Adam Ross of Infinite Prospects for allowing me to use his e-newsletter campaign as the case study below. He generously offered his before and after mailings and metrics data to help YOU avoid the e-news mistakes he has made.
"I wish I had come to you sooner," Adam lamented, "before I lost so much of my list!" Adam, like many business owners had started an e-newsletter in January, 2010, with little more than a contact list and Constant Contact account. He had built up an impressive mailing list of 1400 potential clients over the years and planned to use it to launch his new business. He then set up an e-news template and proceeded to blast his list with advertisements. "I even had good open rates at first (27%)! But then they dropped off." And they kept dropping. By the time Adam had come to me in April, his list had shrunken to about 1150 names due to bounces and un-subscribes and his open rate had dropped by over a third to 17%. He was frustrated and looking for assistance.
Adam has a great business. His company trains automotive dealerships to improve their online contact process, reducing their average cost-per-sale while at the same time increasing their ROI. In addition, Infinite Prospects is a reseller/distributor for several online products that support the process Adam helps implement. He has valuable information and services to share. And he totally understood the value of reaching out to and keeping in touch with his clients via an e-newsletter. He was just going about it the wrong way.

Geo-location based services such as Foursquare, Gowalla, Whrrl, BrightKite and others are fun to use but can also be effective marketing tools. New Look for the Constant Contact Graphic Editor - More 'intuitive' and a bit easier to navigate!
If you haven't been in your Constant Contact account lately, you may want to make a visit. There have been quite a few changes made to the graphic editor!
If you have used the CC Event Marketing tools, you will have already seen some of these changes. They have essentially brought the Email Marketing tools in line with that cleaner, easier to use format. One of the best additions is that now, to edit a block, you can click on ANY of the text in the block - you don't have to click on the pencil icon! For those of you that have used the tool for a while, this may be routine but it is a welcome change that makes the new interface feel a bit more 'intuitive'. Also, when editing a block of text, a tool bar, with font, formatting and save options scrolls along with you so you don't need to scroll all the way back up to see your edit options or to save. They have also streamlined the sidebar tools, making the interface cleaner and more logical. Love that! And while they have added 11 new font choices, one disappointing feature is that they have actually made it more difficult to use custom colors for any fonts. It is now a two step process - go into the color dropdown and hit 'more colors' to get the option of adding your own hex code. |
