Greetings!

RFC has been honored to receive awards twice in 2010.  The College Board gave RFC an Innovation Award last month.  And the United States Tennis Association has recognized RFC with an award for an exemplary scholar/athlete after-school program through its National Junior Tennis and Learning Award.

We are proud that the RFC program stands out as helping many more traditionally disadvantaged students get to college, since we know this means positive, life-changing opportunities for all of these young people.

RFC and USTA Eastern have teamed up to very successfully combine tennis and college prep for three years in an after-school program called A.C.E. (Achievement through Coaching and Education) Project.  This project, currently serving 350 low-income students in 8 schools in New York and New Jersey, has won the National Junior Tennis and Learning Award for the year.

According to the congratulatory letter announcing the award, "Among many qualified applicants, USTA Eastern nominated Reach for College! as an outstanding leader in excellence and continued dedication to youth tennis. You and your staff have made Reach For College! an exemplary model for the National Junior Tennis and Learning network."

Pairing tennis with RFC college-prep is engaging students to get them thinking about and preparing for their futures.  Athletic coaches deliver tennis instruction and academic coaches, whom RFC has trained, deliver the RFC curriculum.  This combination has yielded a 100% college acceptance rate and 80% college-going rate.

"Through the use of the Reach for College! curriculum we have been able to stimulate and encourage our students to become more aggressive about their goals and objectives beyond high school," said an A.C.E. Project instructional coach at Malcolm X Shabazz High in Newark, NJ.  "The parents of the students are extremely supportive and look forward to their children continuing next semester."

Students practice their swings and serves and then explore career and college options, complete college and financial aid applications.  It's a positive, life-changing combination.

"The program opened us up, "said former A.C.E. Project student Torian Brackett, "and made us explore career options and college choices; we've even had to manage our own monthly budget.  I've realized that everyone can benefit from extra assistance to reach their goals."   Torian is currently a freshman at SUNY New Paltz.
