Stepson of the Blues:
 A Chicago Song of Survival

Stepson of the Blues Cover

Blues singer and drummer Larry Hill Taylor grew up in the 60's in the historic Lawndale neighborhoold on Chicago's rough and soulful West Side. His "almost famous" mother and stepfather, singer Vera Taylor and Eddie Taylor came to Chicago during the Great Black Migration from Mississippi. At 5 yrs of age Larry was inspired by watching a drummer playing on the infamous Maxwell Street.  He went home and fashioned his first set of drums out of cardboard boxes, pots and pans. Now in his mid-50's, Larry has survived the blues life -- family abuse and conflict, gangs, prison, drugs and the streets. He has spent 30 years drumming, singing and learning the blues from his musical elders as they change people's hard times into good times.

J. Anthony Graves
Jevon Graves

The hard hitting, street-lit fictional narrative is the next step in the evolution of J. Anthony Graves, a former rapper who performed under the moniker of Von Doe. Hanging up his microphone, drawing upon the instructional inspiration of his muse Stephen King, and invoking the prowess of street griot, Donald Goines, Graves gives us his first novel Dead End. A telling narrative that captures modern day urban life with deft command and intimate nuance, it reflects the aspirations of an avid reader and writer with a keen eye for the next generation of readers and writers. J.Anthony Graves is currently scripting the next installment of Dead End as well as a book of short stories.

The Malcolm X

Malcolm X Project

Moved by the death of his neighbor to lung cancer - as well as a series of intriguing dreams about Malcolm X - Elvis Slaughter embarked on a fact-finding mission to explore the possible connection between her untimely demise and asbestos exposure. What he eventually found though, was much more than he could possibly imagine: evidence of a collusive cover-up regarding the accepted practices of the construction industry in the city of Chicago. As a result of the willful disregard for the health and safety of the general public, many of innocent souls have been exposed to dangerous carcinogenic materials devastating the lives of countless families for many years.

The Big Brown Box

The Big Brown Box is a story from actual childhood experience of mine.  A delivery is made on the block and children are anxiously waiting for the box to be discarded.
It is a story depicting the simple pleasures of creative play by children in an era when WII, X-Box, Playstation and other video games were not in existence.
The book focuses on the use of two tier vocabulary words.  These are words that children may have seen or heard, but perhaps do not know their meaning.  These words are highlighted throughout the book along with student friendly definitions listed on the last page.  This book is also accompanied with a CD narrated by the author. This CD can be used to enhance reading fluency and entertain children as they follow along with the book.
