This is simple, but simple is not easy.
Ming Wu

by Cynthia Durost (1/24/12)
Today, Dr. Ming Wu and I were discussing the impact of fear on health. We have been having a continuing conversation about fear and lifestyle and the Tao for more than twenty years. This conversation has been part of my healing journey.
Over the last 12 years, I have been diagnosed with three different types of pre-cancer and cancer. Each time, these diagnoses have come with a heavy dose of fear. From my own perspective, I see the current treatments of cancer somewhat like a killing field; cut it out, radiate it and chemo it. If the treatment doesn't kill you, you may survive. Dr. Wu (and others like Dr. Carl Simondton, "The Healing Journey", who has spent 50 years in oncology) sees cancer in a selective light: that cancer may come and go in the human body several times in a lifetime. And, that one can live with cancer if one acts to change the root causes of disease.
Dr. Wu practices a more holistic approach to healing. He wishes to empower the individual to heal and to practice living in the moment to balance body, mind and spirit. Dr. Wu encourages us to move away from our attachment to illness and fear. We may choose to follow Western medicine, but we should come to understand and listen to our own bodies. The fear with illness can become obsessive and dominate our every moment. Dr. Wu counsels us to let go of the fear and practice healthy living, and "live the life" - become attuned to the reality of living. Dr. Wu has often said to me and others "This is simple, but simple is not easy".

|
The "not easy" part of Dr. Wu's prescription rests on our awareness to our attachment to fear (of death, of course) and on our taking a pro-active stance. In becoming aware, we can practice changing our emotional physical, mental, and spiritual trauma. To become aware does not necessarily mean the absence of illness or that an illness disappears, but that we learn to live with it in harmony with our true self. This approach also requires us to live every minute a life style which helps us face stress, illness and pain. We need to re-examine and experience a better diet, a better way of dealing with stress and our livelihood, and a better treatment of our bodies.
I once asked Dr. Wu how often he practiced Tai Chi, and he responded "all day long". In order for me as a Westerner to live the life, I had to wake up again to Dr. Wu's message. He is saying live in a flowing manner, a manner without worry, and face each moment consciously. As I began to practice Qi Gong daily, I began to see the effect on all other aspects of my life. Practice and discipline brings me out of the Western analytical mode and into the real flow of living. Doing Qi Gong, Tai Chi or Yoga daily (not just in one class a week) brings the restorative balance Dr. Wu mentions.
Every day, I reflect on the message, "Live the life" and a great joy follows with the practice of doing Qi Gong or Tai Chi. I realize that my continuing conversation with Dr. Wu has been part of this joy and practice. Dr. Wu says that in China the doctor is considered a teacher, and those he treats are his students. From Dr. Wu, I have learned about the Tao, how to practice Qi Gong, how to do Tui Na (Chinese Massage) for family and friends, and how to heal. Dr. Wu has also introduced me to Master Tom Tam and his Tong Ren Healing Systems, and I learn from and participate in at least two Tong Ren sessions per week. I feel healthier than I have ever felt in my whole life because I am learning the Tao, a way of being here now. I feel very blessed and thankful to Dr. Ming Wu for the continuing conversation of my life.
