It's Time to Update!
We ask all chapters to update their information each year so that we have the latest contact information for advisors. The chapter registration form has been simplified, so it will take just a minute to fill out, which you can do on paper or on the SADD website. If you don't have a 2010-2011 Chapter Recognition Certificate, you haven't updated this year! Click here to update now.

Greetings!
Welcome to another issue of The SADDvocate! This month, we hope you'll help us win big money by earning some yourself in our Best Buy @15 contests. We're also announcing pricing details for our 2011 national conference. There's lots of other opportunities for your chapter, too - read on! We're always trying to increase the number of subscribers for The SADDvocate, so that every SADD chapter knows the latest news. Please encourage your SADD chapter members to sign up on sadd.org, or send a list (spreadsheets preferred, with columns for first name, last name, and e-mail address) to Chris Egan, SADD's Director of Field Services, at cegan@sadd.org. Sometimes school computer filters prevent students and advisors from seeing The SADDvocate properly, with full colors and graphics. You can view every issue in our online archive. This issue will be posted to the archive later today. A good source of regular SADD news is our Facebook page. Please like our page today, and encourage your friends to do so as well! Links to our social network pages are on the left bar. |
 | Best Buy @15 - Win $ and Support SADD!
| SADD has been chosen to participate in Best Buy's @15 Exchange, which allows teens to determine Best Buy's donation to charities through online activities. SADD has a chance to win up to $250,000 by January 30, but we need your help to win!
Now you can win money for yourself and your chapter while helping SADD at the same time. We're running three contests - for chapters, for students, and a video contest!
Chapter Contest The top three SADD chapters that register the most people at at15.com will win $100! There are two contest periods - the first ending December 20, and the second ending January 14. Here's what you do:
- Gather students around an internet-connected computer for about 20 minutes at a SADD meeting or class, or set up a laptop in the cafeteria at lunch to reach lots of students.
- Get as many students as possible to register on at15.com.
- Collect their e-mail addresses on the sign-up sheet.
- Fax or scan and e-mail the sign-up sheet to SADD National by the contest deadlines of December 20 and January 14.
Remember, the top 3 chapters will win $100 each during each of the contest periods. Even better, just for sending us the sign-up sheet we'll send you a free poster, so you can't lose!
Student Contest Since students are the ones who earn points on the at15.com site, we're rewarding individuals in our student contest. The top three students with the most points earned will win $50! Just like the Chapter Contest, there are two contest periods - ending December 20 and January 14. Here's what you do:
- Register on at15.com if you haven't already done so.
- Earn points - play games, answer trivia questions, nominate your school for awards. You get 150 points for referring a friend who signs up, so start a referral chain!
 - Then take a screen shot of your point total, and e-mail it to programs@sadd.org by the contest deadlines of December 20 and January 14.
Video Contest We want to hear from you - tell us "Why SADD?" Create an awesome 60-second video telling other teens why SADD rocks, and the best video will win $250! Make sure to include "Vote for SADD @15" at the beginning or end of the video. Contest entries are due by January 3. Click here for contest details and the entry form.
Thanks for your help, and good luck!

 | Programs and Resources
| January 17, 2011 is the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service. This year is the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the federal holiday in Dr. King's honor, which makes it a perfect opportunity to celebrate his legacy through service to others. You can find project ideas, tips and tools, and the opportunity to register your project at MLK.gov. Community service and service-learning are important parts of what SADD is all about, and we hope your chapter will find a way to help on January 17.
Our friends at the Drug-Free Action Alliance are once again holding their "Big Bowl Vote." This is a simple quiz administered to middle and high-school students the Monday morning after the Super Bowl, and measures the impact of alcohol advertising. This can be a powerful tool to gather press coverage for your chapter and call attention to an important issue. For more information, click here.
The Ad Council's "That's Not Cool" campaign works to educate teens about the risks of "sexting" and abusive or controlling behavior through texts, e-mails, and other electronic means. They now have introduced some games to the campaign. Check it out at thatsnotcool.com/games.
Dr. Drew has joined the National Association of School Nurses (NASN) to introduce a new website about teen prescription drug abuse. Called "Smart Moves, Smart Choices," the program calls attention to the problem, with "myth-busting" facts illustrating the scope of prescription drug abuse among young people. Visit smartmovessmartchoices.org to learn more.

 | Contests, Grants, and Awards | It's that time once again - the annual NOYS Act Out Loud contest as part of National Youth Traffic Safety Month in May. The contest challenges schools to create a distracted driving prevention program, and compete to win $10,000 through Internet voting!
There are some changes this year, so here's how it works - your chapter registers on the actoutloud.org website, filling out the entry form with a project idea. Make sure you put "SADD" in the "National Non-Profit Organization Field!" The first 200 teams to register will receive a FREE distracted driving toolkit, so don't wait - register today.
Your chapter will receive information about the contest through monthly webinars, and then you'll implement your project in the spring, and submit a video of your efforts beginning April 11 (the first 200 teams to submit a video receive $200!). All videos must be in by May 6, and then from May 16-22, get as many people as possible to vote for your project over the Internet! The winning team will receive $10,000, and the teams finishing 2nd - 6th will receive $5,000 each. NOYS will also pick the five best projects, regardless of votes, and award those teams $5,000 each. That's big money, so register your project today.
The Marin Institute is holding the 3rd Annual "Free the Bowl" video contest to encourage the NFL to remove alcohol advertising from the Super Bowl. Create a video and you could win $1,000! Last year, Justin McBride from Arizona SADD was one of the winners. The deadline is January 24, 2011. To learn more, click here.
The National Road Safety Foundation is holding a PSA contest about distracted driving, called "Drive to Life." Write a script with your idea for a distracted driving ad, and submit it by February 7, 2011. A select group of finalists will receive a video camera to mock up their ad. The winning ad will be professionally produced, and you'll win a $1,000 scholarship and a trip to New York to participate in the filming! To learn more, click here.

 | Chapter Toolbox | Each month, a member of SADD National's Student Leadership Council (SLC) will write a column designed to help chapters with useful activity ideas, meeting suggestions, and more.
Hey there, SADD students and advisors! My name is Ashley Blasi and I am a member of the SLC. I'm a senior at Abington Heights High School in Pennsylvania, and, like many of you, I'm currently in the middle of the grueling process of applying to colleges, where I hope to attend a Physician Assistant program. Keep your fingers crossed for me!
This time of year, everyone is focused on the holiday season. Sledding, hot cocoa, making snowmen (I'm a master snowman maker!), decorating Christmas trees, roasting chestnuts on an open fire - just a few things those of us in colder climates are having fun with! But while the upcoming winter break and time spent with families and friends occupies our minds, we have to remember this month is also 3D! No, not in the movie sense... it's National Drunk and Drugged Driving (3D) Prevention Month!
Slowly, transitioning over to its new name, National Impaired Driving Prevention Month, 3D Month is an important time to recognize the terrible statistics, especially around the growing problem of drugged driving. Research shows that marijuana, which is growing in use among teens and adults, affects a driver's attentiveness, ability to perceive speed, and reaction time. Besides illegal drugs, prescription drugs can cause dizziness and other side effects that can be dangerous behind the wheel. More research is underway to prove the true danger of drugged driving, but it makes sense to spread the word about what most people perceive as a minor problem at worst. A good source for statistics and information is stopdruggeddriving.org. Make sure to visit SADD's 3D Month page, too!
I hope your chapter has considered what steps you can take this month to help reduce injuries and deaths from impaired driving. Happy (and safe!) holidays to all!

 | Chapter Spotlight - Highland SADD
|
In the Spotlight this month is Highland High School SADD in Lewistown, Missouri. Highland SADD conducted their annual Haunted House at the Lewis County Fairgrounds at the end of October. This two-day event has multiple purposes - the activities at the Fairgrounds are meant to be a fun, alcohol-free draw for teens in the county, helping offer alternatives to risky behavior. The event also raises funds for Highland's after-prom party, used for compelling prizes to bring students to the safe and alcohol-free event SADD Advisor and School Resource Officer David Parrish reports that the students raised more than $1,000! More than 50 students were involved, and worked hard to pull the event off. Congratulations to Highland High School SADD for their hard work and desire to make a difference! If you'd like YOUR chapter to appear in the Spotlight, send news and a good group photo to Chris Egan at cegan@sadd.org. |
 | SADD Speaker Series | Planning for prom? Consider hosting the SADD Family Focus Speaker Series for parents and teens that offers practical advice to help improve family communications and strengthen their relationships.
The program is hosted by SADD Chairman Stephen Wallace, who uses his 30 years of experience working with teens to deliver a clear and compelling message. Here's what one teen is saying about this dynamic program:
"Stephen Wallace provided me with the guidance necessary to face difficult decisions, and he can relate to students and parents alike. Stephen is very enthusiastic and has a genuine interest in helping teens get through tough times." - Jamie B.
This popular presentation is a perfect way to introduce a season of safe celebrations for your school and community. For more information, click here. For your booking, you'll receive a complimentary copy of Stephen's book, Reality Gap, for your school's library/resource center.
