Prayer Corner
Please pray as we begin the
search for a new facility for FourteenSix. The process of finding a new home
for the church may take some time, maybe well into next summer, but we hope to
find what God has for us soon and we've started the process of looking. Pray
that God will provide a facility we can use 24/7. Pray that God will open up
doors only He can open, in a miraculous way so that no one can say "we did this
in our own strength." Pray that God will clearly show us what step of faith we ought
to take. Take a minute and pray right now....

This Coming Sunday, August 30, 2009
The
truth of what we set our minds on can make a huge difference to our confidence, emotions and ability to carry on each day. God wants us to
get in the habit of centering our thinking on Him. In doing so we can defeat
the kind of thinking that drags us down. Come on out this Sunday, August 30, as
we study Colossians 3:1-4 with a message called "Stinkin Thinkin" to find
out more. See ya Sunday....
Coming up....
-
September 6 - Colossians 3:5-11 "Remodel"
-
September 13 - Colossians 3:12-14 "Godly Fashion Sense"

A Word of Encouragement
Malachi 3:8 (NKJV)
"Will a man rob
God? Yet you have robbed Me!" But you say, 'In what way have we robbed You?' In
tithes and offerings....
R.C. Sproul wrote a great article on this verse that I'm
summarizing here but I recommend reading Sproul's article also http://www.crosswalk.com/spirituallife/11607311/page1/.
God is saying that to
withhold the full measure of giving God expects of His people is to be guilty
of theft against God Himself resulting in a curse on the thief. The principle
in the Old Testament was to give 1/10th of our gross yearly income
to the temple. But today, one statistic shows that only 4% of Christians
actually give 1/10th - only 4%. But regardless of the accuracy of
this percentage, it is obvious that the vast majority of Christians do not
tithe.
The most common argument
against tithing is that tithing is part of the Old Testament and no longer
applies to us. But nowhere in the New Testament is tithing said to be ended. In
fact, Jesus contrasted the Old and the New when He taught "the Old covenant
says don't commit adultery but the new says don't even allow lust in your
heart, much less adultery". The Old is only a shadow of the New, and that which
casts the shadow is GREATER than the shadow. So, tithing should be the starting
point of even greater responsibility, not less. But most of us give by far less
than the believers under the Old Testament.
The second argument is that
we "can't afford to tithe". But this puts the idea of giving to God at the bottom
of a list of priorities instead of at the top. God doesn't want to be at the bottom
of my priority list and when I am willing to "sacrifice" to make sure I have
cable TV but I'm not willing to prioritize God's work, that can be a really
weak argument. Besides, in America, down economy or not, we have so much food
we have to worry about weight, so much housing we can afford to think about a
bigger home (when more than ½ the world lives in the equivalent of a card board
box), and so much access to transportation we can worry about getting a new car
every 2 or 3 years when more than 50% of the world has none.
Finally, prioritizing our
giving to God requires us to budget, plan and be purposeful with our resources
instead of being poor managers. Better management is going to be blessed. In
addition, when we give faithfully we find a joy in really helping God's work
that we can't find as outsiders. But most importantly, God Himself said "Put
me to the test, says the LORD of hosts, if I will not open the windows of
heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more
need" (3:10). Have you put God to the test in your giving? Maybe
it's time you started.

Devotion
Think of yourself as a boss at the place where you work (if you're
already the boss, then this should be easy). You have a big job that
needs to be completed this week so you go to your employees to assign
some tasks. You're expecting to hear from them something like "yes,
sir/ma'am, right away," but instead you get something more like "well,
let me think about it...You know, I'd be glad to do that for you
because I can see how that would benefit the company, and it would even
benefit me personally in several ways. I'll get right on that as
soon as I finish these other things that I believe are very important."
When God tells us to do something, whether it's through His written
Word or speaking to us in our spirit, He expects a response like "yes,
Lord, right away." Our devotion to God sometimes requires simply doing
what we are told because we are told to do it. Anything less is a
challenge to His authority over our lives. God is the Creator and He
gets to make the rules.
Fortunately for us, our God is a good God and He has promised that all
things work together for good to those who love Him and are called
according to his purpose (Romans 8:28). We may be able to figure out
the good in God's plan, but even if we can't, we must show our devotion
(love) to Him by being completely obedient (see John 14:21). --------------------------------- You can read more at the WorshipVibes blog. Feel free to leave your comments and to suggest further topics.

Thank You
Thank you Kari Sanford for
joining forces with Ernest Finklia, our prayer team leader, in the prayer
ministry. Kari had a great idea to help the prayer ministry with follow-up
e-cards, emails and regular mail so that people who call Ernest for the prayer
chain will know we have indeed lifted them up in prayer. This sort of
"high touch" ministry spells real love and encouragement and we are so grateful
to Kari (and Ernest). Thank you.

Vision
When I traveled from Amsterdam to Paris
I found myself restless. I knew where I was going but it was such a long way. I
finally found some satisfaction in looking at a map showing the stops along the
way. I was able to take some satisfaction checking off a mental checklist in my
mind as each stop came up. In the same way, we know as Christians that heaven
is our destination - and that could be a long time away. The elder's of
FourteenSix recently sat down and created a strategy document outlining the
"stops along the way" so that we can all see how our skills, abilities and
resources can fit along the journey. Check out the "roadmap" this Sunday (and
coming soon to the internet) and pray about how God is leading you to plug into
His vision for FourteenSix.

Signing Off
I'm really excited about
stepping out in faith to find a new facility. I have no idea where God is going
to open up a door, how He's going to do it, or exactly when - I just know He
will. That's part of the adventure of following Him. If I knew exactly what God
was going to do there wouldn't be any fun in the discovery. So we're out
looking for a new facility, asking you to pray and waiting on God to see all
the how's and when's. It's going to be fun. Keep us in prayer and enjoy the
ride.
"Over and out"....
Sincerely,
Pastor Pat |
