"From Pregnancy to Labor and

Spring 2010
Hello Everyone!

Diane Ellen
Welcome to the SPRING 2010 Diane Ellen Newsletter!

I have missed you all!!! How are you???

I have been very busy...up to all kinds of things.  I have recently taken my many years of experience and knowledge about nursing and managing a business into a different arena.  I am currently helping other men and women become nurses!  Going to leave it at that...but this challenge has kept me busy!  I apologize for the disappearance!  I hope you always know that I am here for you...whether or not I send out newsletters.  Please never hesitate emailing me, contacting me on Facebook, or calling me if there is something you want to ask me or something I can help you with.  I mean that to you all.

I am still teaching my One-Day Childbirth Class and my Infant CPR Classes.  I am now, unfortunately, limited as to the number of couples I may help each month in labor as Labor Support.  Presently, I can only help 2 couples each month.  Especially if I have helped you with a prior birth, and IF YOU KNOW YOU ARE PREGNANT AGAIN...(EVEN IF VERY EARLY)...AND WANT TO RESERVE ONE OF THESE SPACES...PLEASE CALL AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE!  Also, if you are going to have a planned C-Section or induction on the weekend, I will be available to help you with "Birth Photography" or Labor Support as well.   My "Birth Photography" may be available to you if early in morning or late afternoon as well as weekends.  I am no longer renting the Water Tubs, although still a very big fan of laboring in water!  I am sending all tub inquiries and referrals to Lorie McCoy at Amazing Births (561.998.5351).

And that is that!!!  Now...let's get down to business!

Five Year Old Diane Ellen at Easter
PS:  I am working on this newsletter on Easter Sunday and thought you'd get a chuckle with my Easter photo.  I was 5 years old when my mother enrolled me in dancing school.  In my very 1st dance recital, at 5 years old, I was an Easter Bunny!

~With Love & Friendship,

Diane

P.S.S.  Keep in touch with me during the month on Facebook!  Just "ask me to be your friend!"

Readers Share on FACEBOOK

I love seeing the different Moms & Dads post pictures of their children/babies on FACEBOOK.
It is an easy way for me to stay in touch with so many of you.

Recently, some of you have shared experiences or information that I would like to share with all of you:

  • Mom JG wrote me that she saved her choking daughter thanks to my Infant CPR class.  The little girl was choking on a LEARN CPR!!!pancake, and luckily mom remembered what she learned at my class. EVERYONE WHO HAS AN INFANT SHOULD TAKE INFANT CPR!  MOM!  DAD!  GRANDPARENTS!  THE NANNY/HOUSEKEEPER!  As well as child/adult CPR.  An inexpensive class that takes 2 hours could save someone's life!  That's worth it, isn't it????
  • Dad MG shared this information with me:  Baby Slings recalled after infant deaths.
More than 1 million baby slings made by Infantino were recalled after claims link them to 3 infant deaths.  For more information go to www.msnbc.msn.com and read article below on Recalls. To watch video clip on slings click-
  • Mom CCP shared a terrible story on FB of the death of her friend's 2 year old: his neck was tangled in the cord from window blinds... Many blinds are cordless. If yours are not, PLEASE place bed/crib away from blinds and tie up loose cords.  For more information read article below on Recalls.
  • and on a lighter silly note from Mom JSM..."Just in case you were wondering.... Diane Ellen pens CAN be washed and dried without ruining a full load of laundry! And the darn thing still works! Your pens ROCK! ;)"---hehe....wonder if you are the only one who has discovered this...hehe??!!

Children's Recalls of March!

Infantino "Sling Rider" and
"Wendy Bellissimo" Infant Slings!

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in cooperation with Infantino, are announcing a free replacement for the Infantino "Slingrider" and "Wendy Bellissimo" infInfantino Sling Recallant slings.  The CPSC advises consumers to immediately stop
using these slings for infants younger than 4 months of age due to a risk of suffocation and to contact Infantino for a free replacement product.  CPSC is aware of 3 reports of deaths that occurred in these slings in 2009:  a 7 week old, 6 day old, and 3 month old.  Please visit the Infantino website for replacement details:  www.infantino.com or call 1-866-860-1361

On March 12th, the CPSC issued a WARNING ABOUT SLING CARRIERS FOR BABIES.  The slings pose 2 different types of suffocation risks for bInfantino SlingRider Baby Slingsabies.  In the first few months of a baby's life, when they have difficulty controlling their necks due to weak muscles, the sling's fabric can press against the infant's nose and mouth, blocking the baby's breathing and rapidly suffocating the baby within a minute or two.  Additionally, where a sling keeps the infant in a curled position bending the chin toward the chest, the airways can be restricted, limiting the oxygen supply.  The baby would not be able to cry for help and can slowly suffocate.

*******Currently, THERE ARE NO SAFETY STANDARDS FOR INFANT SLING CARRIERS!

SAFETY!

Summertime bring Sun, Fun and an increased awareness for Safety!

Spring is here.  Summertime is right around the corner.  For those of us in South Florida, those two seasons might as well be one in the same.  I see more and more people at the pool and the beach.  Sadly, that nice cool weather seems to be leaving us, and the warmer Florida days are coming once again.  Warm weather means more outdoor activities.  Let's review a few basics:

  • WATER:  Babies can drown in an only an inch of water. This puts them at risk of drowning in wading pools, bathtubs, buckets, diaper pails, toilets, spas and hot tubs. Make bath time and other water-related activities safe by actively supervising your baby and keeping your baby's bath and play areas free from hazards. Life jackets are even better than arm floaties when trying to keep your child safe when near water. TEACH YOUR CHILDREN HOW TO SWIM!  In Boca Raton, try Lifestyle Swim School( Rob McKay 561.393.6386) www.babyswimming.com
  • HOT AUTOMOBILES:  A baby should never be left alone in aBaby left in hot car vehicle - even for a minute. Heat is much more dangerous to babies than to adults. When left in a hot vehicle, a young child's body temperature may increase three to five times faster than an adult's would, causing permanent injury or even death. Learn how to protect your baby and keep her safe in and around vehicles.
  • POOL SAFETY: A swimming pool can be very dangerous for children. If possible, do not put a swimming pool in your yard until your children are older than 5 years.
    • Help protect your children from drowning by doing the following:
    • Never leave your children alone in or near the pool, even for a moment. An adult who knows CPR should actively supervise children at all times.
    • You must put up a fence to separate your house from the pool. Most Children and Poolsyoung children who drown in pools wander out of the house and fall into the pool. Install a fence at least 4 feet high around all 4 sides of the pool. This fence will completely separate the pool from the house and play area of the yard. Use gates that self-close and self-latch, with latches higher than your children's reach.
    • Keep rescue equipment (such as a shepherd's hook or life preserver) and a telephone by the pool.
    • Do not use air-filled "swimming aids" as a substitute for approved life vests.
    • Remove all toys from the pool after use so children aren't tempted to reach for them.
    • After the children are done swimming, secure the pool so they can't get back into it.  A power safety cover that meets the standards of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) may add to the protection of your children but should not be used in place of the fence between your house and the pool. Even fencing around your pool and using a power safety cover will not prevent all drownings.
  • SUN:  Keep babies younger than 6 months out of direct sunlight. Find shade under a tree, umbrella, or the stroller canopy.  When possible, dress yourself and your kids in cool, comfortable clothing that covers the body, like lightweight cotton pants, long-sleeved shirts, and hats.  Select clothes made with a tight weave - they protect better than clothes with a looser weave. If you're not sure how tight a fabric's weave is, hold it up to see how Sun and Safetymuch light shines through. The less light, the better.  Wear a hat or cap with a brim that faces forward to shield the face.  Limit your sun exposure between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm, when UV rays are strongest.  Wear sunglasses with at least 99% UV protection (look for child-sized sunglasses with UV protection for your child).  In Palm Beach County call David Escosa, Safety Consultant, with Protect-A-Tot Childproofing at 561-966-0304 or 1-888-494-TOTS
