Hospital Tours of Maternity Units
|
I recommend taking a tour of each hospital where your doctor or midwife has privileges to deliver your baby. Call each hospital and ask if they offer a tour of the maternity unit, when it is offered and do you need to reserve a spot. During the tour, take note of such factors as security and what kind, any free breastfeeding assistance if needed (Lactation Consultants), private rooms or possible shared rooms, friendly staff and overall appearance of unit. Which place did you like best? Take a tour of all places then you decide! Then go register!
Boca Raton Community Hospital Toppel Family Place 800 Meadows Road Boca Raton, FL 33486 561-95-Learn or 561-955-3276 Offered each Wednesday night at 6pm or each Saturday morning at 10am. No reservations required. Come to Maternity Lobby. Call for more information.

Bethesda Memorial Hospital 28155 South Seacrest Blvd. Boynton Beach, FL 33435 Pre-registration is required for tour. Must call the Bethesda Baby Line at 561-369-2229 to reserve a place.

October 2009

Hello Everyone!
Welcome to the OCTOBER 2009 Diane Ellen Newsletter!
Ah...October! I do love this month. Yes, I am still waiting for the cool breeze and autumn leaves...that I am. The 100% wool clogs have not made it out of the closet just yet...but they are coming...I promise!
In the meantime, Halloween is coming! Some of the costumes I've seen for this year for babies are too cute.
Love the Lobster!!

But a Car Air Freshner??? That one just looks wrong!!!

And the only one crazier would be the Whoopie Cushion! Poor babies! (hehe..)
Whatever happened to being a pumpkin, witch, cat or ghost? If anyone has a cute Halloween Costume picture of their baby/child and you want to share it, email it to me, and I will post the best one next month. (Put a "Diane Ellen" pen in their hand and would probably be a sure winner of the "Diane Ellen Pen" contest! hehe...)
Be safe! Don't eat too much candy! and Happy Halloween to all!
Diane
P.S. Keep in touch with me during the month on Facebook! Just "ask me to be your friend!" or Blog Me by going to http://nursedianeellen.blogspot.com

SIDS---BAD EXAMPLES: New study shows advertisers depict UNSAFE sleep environments
What doctors recommend to prevent sudden infant death syndrome is not what is always shown in women's magazines.
A recent study was done to evaluate pictures in magazines widely read by women of childbearing age, for adherence to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) guidelines for safe infant sleep practices.
The researchers
analyzed pictures of sleeping infants in articles and advertisements
found in 24 magazines circulated among 20 to 40-year old women. They
observed sleep positions, whether the baby was placed on its side or
stomach rather than on its back, as well as hazards in the sleeping
environment including soft bedding. CONCLUSION: More than 1/3 photos in women's magazines depict babies in unsafe sleep positions and that 2/3 of sleep environments depicted are also unsafe!
(PHOTO ABOVE IS EXAMPLE OF UNSAFE SLEEP POSITION)
Messages in the media that are inconsistent with health care messages create confusion and misinformation about infant sleep safety and may lead inadvertently to unsafe practices.
(PHOTO ABOVE IS EXAMPLE OF SAFE SLEEP POSITION)
A NOTE FROM ME: Sometimes, when I teach my Childbirth Class, moms become upset with me. I try and teach them the recommended guidelines about SIDS. Very often they say they don't understand why they can't use the bumpers, sleep positioners, etc. that they see in the magazines and stores and that their friends use. Now I understand the problem. The health care people are teaching you one thing and the advertisers are showing you something else because they want you to buy their product!
If any of you have attended my Infant CPR Class, you know I have that problem there too. The video I use, which is an updated and reasonably good one, shows the baby in a crib with bumpers, mobiles, toys, etc. Usually you see me go nuts when that part of the video is shown.
So...what to do??? I guess we healthcare people will just keep trying to inform moms and dads of the safety guidelines in regards to SIDS from the American Academy of Pediatrics. I'll just keep dodging the invisible bullets during that portion of my childbirth class, and hopefully, one day, these manufacturers of unsafe baby products will wake up, feel guilty, and stop selling these misrepresented products to unsuspecting moms and dads!!!

Laboring in Water came to Boca!
Last week, I had my first childbirth class student labor in one of the water tubs! She a ppeared to be much happier when in the tub as opposed to laying in the hospital bed. The nurses were very supportive of my student's wishes. That day, the nursing students from Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing at FAU were there to observe and help me fill up the tub. The Boca Raton Community Hospital is 1 of 2 hospitals that I know of, in the Palm Beach/Broward County areas, that not only allows but encourages laboring women to labor in water!
I checked in on my student the next morning and wondered if after a good night's sleep she was still happy with her decision to go unmedicated/without the epidural and asked if she would do it all again. Her answer??? ABSOLUTELY YES!

Congratulations! Let's Share Some Good News with One Another!
~ FROM A FORMER CHILDBIRTH CLASS STUDENT:
Diane,
I hope you are doing well. It is hard to believe that it has been almost a year since we sat in your class. Foster, our son, is ten and half months old with his birthday being October 24th.
We have some exciting news to report. We are expecting baby #2 in February and we just found out that Foster will have a little brother. The boys will be 15 months apart and Randi is already starting to feel outnumbered.
Whenever we get the chance, we recommend your class. Thanks, again, and all the best.
Kevin, Randi, and Foster (plus one in blue) September 2009
Dear Kevin and Randi,
CONGRATULATIONS!!! I am very excited for you! Please don't forget there is a page toward the back of your PCT Childbirth Workshop Workbook about "Siblings & the New Baby". Also, you can go either to www.DianeEllen.com and click on "Videos" or go to www.NewBaby.com and put my name in the search box and find me and my videos. There is a 2-minute clip on "Preparing Siblings for the New Baby".
And, without say, HAPPY BIRTHDAY FOSTER!!! All the best and thanks for sharing the good news!!! ~Diane |

Testimonial!
~ FROM A FORMER CHILDBIRTH CLASS STUDENT
Hi Diane!
We took your class in July and found it very informative for first time parents (I'm the nurse that didn't say much). I'll be going in tomorrow night for an induction with Rachel and I'm glad I have your book to help me with things I need to bring and expectations throughout the whole labor process. We bought a ball after your class and I've found it very useful when I have back and hip aches.
Anyway, I just wanted to say "thanks" and keep up the good work! ~Cheyenne Compton 09-02-09
CONGRATULATIONS! To Mom & Dad on Baby Girl... Lauren Isabelle (pictured above)! Thank you for taking the time to write your very kind email. I am so glad that you found my class so helpful and that you took your book to labor with you! I love the birthing ball too! Again...congratulations and thanks for sharing the good news! She is beautiful! Look at those eyes! ~Diane
