Cost: $135 CASH for mom-to-be and (1)non-pregnant guest. Private childbirth class available in your home for $99/hr with a 4-hour minimum.
Everything you need to know in 1 class! Great review for 2nd timers or for planned cesarean section parents. Topics include Baby Basics & Introduction to Car Seat Safety. To help you take notes during the day, class fee includes one FREE 98-page PCT Childbirth Workshop workbook as well as a "Diane Ellen" pen! Class includes FREE misc. beverages (coffee/tea/cocoa/juice) and "unhealthy" snacks (doughnut holes, pretzels, animal crackers, cheese crackers).
Location: One weekend a month class is at Boca Raton Community Hospital in the auditorium in the education building opposite the maternity entrance (800 Meadows Road, Boca Raton, FL 33486). Single day class is at Women's Healthcare Associates (6853 SW 18th Street, Suite 301, Boca Raton, FL 33433).
Bring: Water to drink, healthy snacks, sweater/sweat shirt. Wear comfortable clothes so may try to sit on birthing balls. A 45-minute break is given for you to go out and get your desired food for lunch.

Hospital Tours of Maternity Units

I recommend taking a tour of each hospital where your doctor
or midwife has privileges to deliver your baby. Call each hospital and ask if they offer a tour of the maternity unit, when it is offered and do you need to reserve a spot. During the tour, take note of such factors as security and what kind, any free breastfeeding assistance if needed (Lactation Consultants), private rooms or possible shared rooms, friendly staff and overall appearance of unit. Which place did you like best? Take a tour of all places then you decide! Then go register!

Welcome to the SEPTEMBER 2009 Diane Ellen Newsletter!
Well, Summer is almost over and September 22 marks one of my favorite days of the year...
AUTUMN BEGINS!
Yeah! The changing color of the leaves, the cool breeze blowing, he-he....I know...but I am getting closer to being able to wear my L.L.Bean 100% wool clogs out in public without people making too much fun of me, right??? he-he... This month have lots of tidbits of information...so without further adieu... I HAVE A PERSONAL REQUEST---WANTED: I am looking for some type of LARGE CONFERENCE ROOM or LARGE AREA (could be in a hall, park, restaurant, school, cafeteria, dealership, hotel) somewhere in Boca area that you could either donate or rent to me (please...for cheap! for me!) To be used for 2-3 hours on a Saturday or Sunday, sometime between 10am-2pm, once a month. Am working on the Next Diane Ellen Project and need some help! So...if any of you know/have access to/wish to donate your space... would love you forever!!! Ideally need about 10 tables, chairs, and plenty of available parking. Anyone??? Okay...well let's get on then...off to the September Newsletter we go! Diane

Your Dog, New Baby, & Safety
Last month, the country was horrified when a three-day old baby in Kentucky was snatched from his crib by the family's pet dog
-- a four year-old wolf-dog hybrid named Dakota. The canine was seen in
the family's backyard holding baby A.J. in her mouth "like a loaf of
bread," reported WLKY News. Though he suffered a skull fracture, collapsed lungs, broken ribs,  contusions and cuts, A.J. is recovering fully at his parents' house. Shortly after the incident, the baby's father, Michael Smith, told Good Morning America that while he harbored no ill feelings toward Dakota, who is staying at the Jessamine County SAVE Center, he said "there's no way she can come back in the house."
After I read it, I felt sad. A beautiful family dog, with no history of aggression, was probably going to have to be destroyed. Was there something more that could have been done to prevent this???
Here are some helpful hints:
- Let your dog observe babies/children
- Change your praise word of your dog-no more "good boy" or "good girl"
- Practice gently grabbing your dog
- Give your dog a baby blanket to smell
- Remove any squeaky toys your dog may have
- Bring home a dirty diaper/blanket from the hospital
- When the baby comes home, do not force interaction.
- Act lovingly toward dog when you are holding the baby.
- Use dog gates, screens, "dutch doors" (half bedroom door like a barn door) to keep your dog out of the baby's room at all times!
- Always know where your baby and your dog are!
Ask your Veterinarian for any other suggestions. There are classes, books, CDs with baby sounds, and businesses like "Dogstown University" which have a program, called Canines and Cradles, to help train your dog with the new baby (954.422.5764 South Powerline, Deerfield Beach, FL)
Having a new baby is a big adjustment for everyone... including our pets! Let's all get prepared for the arrival of the New Baby!

It's been 3 years already since Michelle, our first, and Danny, our second, were born and I wanted to tell you how thankful we are for being in our 2 most important days of our lives. I never thought how important it is to have a doula when you are in labor. When I was in labor with Michelle, I remember how you made me smile all the time. Even when I was getting the epidural and almost left bruises in your ba ck, you were still smiling at me. After the
epidural, I saw that you didn't take your eyes off the monitor that was on Michelle's heart rate---making sure we were both safe. I can see how passionate you are for your job and how much you love helping people. If there is a person that for a moment thinks of not hiring you for the labor, please give them this letter or give them my number and I will explain to them how important it is to have you there; from the medical point of view to the emotional point of view. I hope a lot of women would have the opportunity to experience having you because it is really worth it!!!!!!! We miss you so much and thanks for sending birthday cards and not forgetting these important dates for us as parents.

As a Personal Childbirth Trainer, she has enjoyed educating and guiding couples through the birth process 219 times! In addition, she has helped 4 other nurses start their own businesses teaching the PCT Childbirth Workshop in Washington, D.C. and Florida!
