Hospital Tours of Maternity Units
|
I recommend taking a tour of each hospital where your doctor or midwife has privileges to deliver your baby. Call each hospital and ask if they offer a tour of the maternity unit, when it is offered and do you need to reserve a spot. During the tour, take note of such factors as security and what kind, any free breastfeeding assistance if needed (Lactation Consultants), private rooms or possible shared rooms, friendly staff and overall appearance of unit. Which place did you like best? Take a tour of all places then you decide! Then go register!
Boca Raton Community Hospital Toppel Family Place 561-95-Learn or 561-955-3276 Offered each Wednesday night at 6pm or each Saturday morning at 10am. No reservations required. Come to Maternity Lobby. Call for more information.
West Boca Medical Center Birthcare Pavilion 1-877-22-Tenet or 1-877-228-3638 Offered Monday night at 5:30pm and Friday/Saturday mornings at 10am. Must call to reserve a place.
Bethesda Memorial Hospital Pre-registration is required for tour. Must call the Bethesda Baby Line at 561-369-2229 to reserve a place.

Hello Everyone! Welcome to the MAY 2009 Diane Ellen Newsletter!
Happy Mother's Day to all Moms and Moms-to-Be!
Mother's Day is Sunday, May 10th! Did you ever wonder how this day of honoring you began???
Very early on, the Egyptians held an annual festival to honor the Goddess Isis who was commonly regarded as the Mother of the pharaohs. The Romans celebrated Phrygian Goddess Cybele or Magna Mater (Great Mother). Cybele, stems from the Greek Goddess Rhea, who was the Mother of most of the major deities including Zeus. Other societies worshipped similar deities including Gaia the Earth Goddess and Meter oreie the Mountain Mother. Early Christians initially used the holiday to worship the church they were baptized in known as their "Mother Church". In the 1600's England broadened the celebration to include real Mothers, earning the name Mother's Day.
When the first English settlers came to America, they discontinued the tradition of Mothering Day, speculation has it for many reasons. Skipping much history, by 1909 forty-six states were holding Mother's Day services as well as parts of Canada and Mexico. In 1914 Woodrow Wilson signed it into national observance declaring the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day.
Many families devote Mother's Day to activities in honor of Mom: going out to dinner, flowers, cards, chocolate candies. US restaurants claim it is the busiest day of the year. Long distance telephone calls peak on this day. Retailers report it as the second highest gift giving day of the year behind Christmas.
So...whether you are already a Mom or about to become a Mom or have a Mom...I wish you all a
Very HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!
~Diane

A Mother's Lesson Learned~
A mother shares her experience with a plastic toy and her intuition!
Hi Diane! Wanted to pass along a lesson I learned with our newest baby...
While putting down Baby Nathanael in his crib, I kept having the thought that his baby mobile could fall on him, so I put him down just past the mobile, and continually inspected the mobile, etc. Then, one day it happened...the plastic arch just broke in two pieces, for no apparent reason. Thankfully, Nathanael was not under it at the time. I had to conclude that the plastic was just too old for use with our fourth baby.
I started sorting through other objects that we had, and threw out several older items. I also tossed out some not-so-old plastic items that had been stored in a very hot attic.
Please remind your clients to look for and pay attention to expiration dates on things made of plastic (like car seats), and consider the age and storage of their plastic items before they use them...and listen to those "nagging thoughts" about their baby's safety. I'm very glad I did!
---Nathanael's Mom

New! MAN 2 MAN thoughts Helpful Hints from One Dad-to-Be or New Dad to Another
So many of you guys say "Tell your dads to do this or not to do this. Tell them to bring this or don't say this!" while in labor!!! So...for those gentlemen who wish to share their wisdom or for those who wish to learn from other men's experiences... here we go! (PLEASE FEEL FREE TO EMAIL ME WITH YOUR Man 2 Man thoughts"!) THANK YOU to the Dads who have already sent me and are willing to share their thoughts and experiences with my readers!
- Don't worry about how much it will cost! I lost a lot of hair and sleep stressing out about this one. I didn't have to, even with NO maternity coverage! Just make sure you have health insurance for your wife and make sure it is good insurance. Make sure your wife's doctor knows this from the beginning. The hospital and others will work with you on the cost as well as payment plans. We had a nice nursery setup from day one but take it from me...you don't need to splurge on a nursery at first. We used a travel crib for the first four to five months; we set up the little crib in our bedroom and it worked out great. This also made feedings at night much easier. Get your family to forgo the expensive gifts for cash! You will need a lot of bottles and other stuff so try friends and families for freebies! You are bringing a child into the world, your child, so do whatever you have to do to get the job done: beg, borrow, and negotiate!
---Dave (Emma's Dad)
