Hospital Tours of Maternity Units
|
I recommend taking a tour of each hospital where your doctor or midwife has privileges to deliver your baby. Call each hospital and ask if they offer a tour of the maternity unit, when it is offered and do you need to reserve a spot. During the tour, take note of such factors as security and what kind, any free breastfeeding assistance if needed (Lactation Consultants), private rooms or possible shared rooms, friendly staff and overall appearance of unit. Which place did you like best? Take a tour of all places then you decide! Then go register!
Boca Raton Community Hospital Toppel Family Place 561-95-Learn or 561-955-3276 Offered each Wednesday night at 6pm or each Saturday morning at 10am. No reservations required. Come to Maternity Lobby. Call for more information.
West Boca Medical Center Birthcare Pavilion 1-877-22-Tenet or 1-877-228-3638 Offered Monday night at 5:30pm and Friday/Saturday mornings at 10am. Must call to reserve a place.
Bethesda Memorial Hospital Pre-registration is required for tour. Must call the Bethesda Baby Line at 561-369-2229 to reserve a place.

April 2009

Hello Everyone! Welcome to the APRIL 2009 Diane Ellen Newsletter!
Ah Spring has Sprung! Officially it started March 20th. What a great time to do some spring cleaning! Why not go through the closets, make room for the new baby's items that are coming or maybe the baby has already been born and out grown certain clothes, toys, and baby items. Why not give some stuff away! Do some spring cleaning! I have two favorite places to donate items I no longer want/need. One is the Boca Raton Community Hospital's Debbie-Rand Thrift Store (561.395.2208). They are located at 903 Meadows Road opposite the BRCH. The other is AVDA (Aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse) (1-888-9-PICKUP). AVDA offers pick up six days a week at your home/office or drop off at the t hrift store (1/4 mile south of SW 18th Street on west side of 441 in Boca; M-S 9am-6pm, Sun 10-5). I know some families are truly experiencing economic hardship during this time. More and more people are looking for some kind of break. Please consider selling or giving away your no longer needed items below on DIANE ELLEN'S LIST or at one of these thrift stores. Let's try to help one another!
AND THE COOKIE CONTEST RESULTS ARE IN... THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR YOUR SUPPORT! I would like to thank everyone who took the time out to vote for my Pignoli Cookie last month. It is "with great sadness" (I know...I'm a little dramatic...not the first time been told that..he-he!) that i must say that my cookies lost to this man...a baker of a brown ie! Why does the brownie always win??!!! Someone once said "the brownie is the one you want to date, but the cookie is the one you want to settle down with and marry"! he-he... I know. I'm crazy! His video is entertaining. I admit it. I tried to do the "right thing" and be the "gracious loser" by emailing him and congratulating him, but in my heart my cookies and I were still sad! He-he...but thank you all for your Pignoli Cookie loyalty!!! (and some of you are the most loyal people I've ever seen!) We're not giving up though, I've already entered the Secret Banana Bread in a contest for April 2010! He-he...I'm sure you'll hear more about that one next year.
~Diane

SIDS UPDATE:
Use of FAN in baby's room may help reduce SIDS!
Fans may reduce the risk of SIDS, or sudden infant death syndrome, a new study shows.
Babies who slept in a room with a fan turned on were 72% less likely to die from SIDS, according to a study released back in October from Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine. Fans offered even more protection to babies
sleeping in warm rooms, where temperatures were over 69 degrees,
according to the study. Although doctors don't know exactly why fans
seem to help, it's possible that fans improve air circulation,
preventing infants from rebreathing exhaled carbon dioxide, which can
pool up in the gap between a baby's face and the mattress.
In addition, the AAP(American Acedemy of Pediatrics) recommends: ~Always place an infant on their BACK TO SLEEP! ! ! ~Use of firm mattress covered by a sheet. ~Keep soft objects, loose bedding, quilted padding out of crib. Encourages use of sleeping sacks. ~Avoid infant's exposure to second-hand smoke. ~Offer a pacifier at nap and bed times. ~Avoid overheating infant. ~Avoid
products that claim to prevent SIDS (monitors, sleep positioners). Most have not been tested for safety.
None have been shown to reduce the risk of SIDS.

New! MAN 2 MAN thoughts Helpful Hints from One Dad-to-Be or New Dad to Another
So many of you guys say "Tell your dads to do this or not to do this. Tell them to bring this or don't say this!" while in labor!!! So...for those gentlemen who wish to share their wisdom or for those who wish to learn from other men's experiences... here we go! (PLEASE FEEL FREE TO EMAIL ME WITH YOUR Man 2 Man thoughts"!) THANK YOU to the Dads who have already sent me and are willing to share their thoughts and experiences with my readers!
- PREPARE, PREPARE, PREPARE: You've got 9 months to do it and you should take advantage of that. Anything you can do---getting furniture, bedding, strollers, toys, bathtubs, diapers, etc...you should get BEFORE the baby comes. For first time parents, there is a lot to learn about as you decide on bottles, diapers, wipes, etc. You need the time to understand it and you don't want to feel rushed as the birth approaches
- Do not wait to go to the hospital once her water breaks! This is not a time for hanging out, watching the last 5 minutes of a tv show, or sending that important email...this is time to get yourself to the hospital! Contractions become considerably more powerful once her water breaks and you do not want to be in a car going 90 miles an hour with your wife yelling at the top of her lungs.
- Do yourself a favor and hire a personal childbirth trainer (labor support person). It really helped to take the pressure off of the delivery and made me feel comfortable that my wife was getting the right care in a specialized and unique situation-being first time parents in a hospital about to give birth! The most important part was that from the moment we teamed up with our labor support person, Diane, many months before the birth, my own personal anxiety of delivery was greatly reduced. I was so glad to have her there.
---Brad (Juliet's Dad)
