Resources for Mentors: Lobs & Lessons Family Open (for Mentors too!) Lobs & Lessons is hosting the inaugural Family Open: QuickStart Tennis for Everyone on Saturday, September 17 from 9:00am-1pm at the Mary & Frances Youth Center on VCU's campus. The Family Open is an adult-child doubles tennis tournament that gives children and their guardians or mentors the opportunity to play side by side and encourage the reluctant player, whether it is an adult or child. Sign up here! Child Safety As a mentor or youth worker, do you ever need a refresher on basic child safety practices or want tip sheets to share with parents and caregivers? State Farm and Safe Kids USA, have developed very useful tip sheets that reflect the new child passenger safety recommendations. Download them for free at Safe Kids USA. Follow up Mentor Training  After being trained by VMP and receiving support from program coordinators, mentors may need additional training. Education Northwest has provided an on-line training opportunity showing real mentor/mentee scenarios and possible problems. Take a look!

Funding Opportunities for Programs
Target
With partnerships with FIRST BOOK and The SEARCH INSTITUTE, Target is providing various education grants: Early childhood reading grants, Target field trip grants and Art + Culture in Schools grants. If you are a school based mentoring program, consult with your school about applying for these grants.
The Finance Project
Review a presentation from The Finance Project on developing funding for mentoring programs. Their suggestions to develop relationships with local businesses, conducting community fundraising efforts and, maximizing funding revenue might be helpful to your organization.

Recognition of VMP Board & Staff:
On Tuesday, October 18, the Richmond History Makers event will honor the Virgina Center for Inclusive Communities (VCIC), nominated by VMP. VCIC helped provide The Conciliation Project, the dramatic group at our annual event and summit. You may remember that VMP received an award at this event last year.
On Thursday, October 27, three Humanitarian Awards will be presented to VMP Board and Staff members.Two Board members, Don Cowles and Willie Dell (08) and staff member, Miriam Davidow will receive this recognition at the Richmond Marriott. Congratulations!
